College Town vs Big City

I always used to want to attend university in a large urban area, but as I get closer to the deadline for a final decision, I'm starting to wonder whether a smaller environment might be better.

How do you know what atmosphere is right for you? Can you guys list some pros and cons of each and what personalities these settings usually appeal to?

I prefer a smaller college town (Dartmouth’s especially). I’m a generally quiet, studious person that enjoys hanging out and I think a smaller college town appeals to me for these reasons. A city will offer more opportunities to do things off campus rather than on campus though may feel overwhelming to some.

I think the best situation is both though. For instance, Boston College is in a nice little area that has the feel of a college town, but you can be in dowtown Boston in no time. I’d look for this kind of a situation if I were you. BC, Villanova, etc.

Boston is a big city with a college town feel. University Park is also a big city with a college town feel.
