How is the college town? are there things to do outside of campus?

Pasadena's nice. Upscale, lots of places to do fun stuff. It's no college town though.

It's not like Caltech is in the middle of nowhere...
The food in Pasadena is delicious. Downtown LA is 20 minutes away. The beaches are about 40 minutes away, and mountains are within biking distance. There are concerts you can go to if you are into modern music or LA phil, Disney Hall, if you are into classical music. There are museums, too. And don't forget about night clubs. Basically, if you have a car (or know someone that does) you can get pretty much whatever you want. And the public transportation is rather cheap (comparing to NYC, at least) and is also capable of taking you to most places (it will take a lot longer, however).

That said, do not be surprised if you are not able to go to the beach every weekend because of the sets :p

My friend and I went to the beach almost every weekend for a year. Then we got kind of lazy about the whole thing.

You guys know of anything in Pasadena within a decent walk of campus that doesn't close by 10? One of my favorite things in Pittsburgh was how many of the restaurants would run half-priced appetizers and some other menu items after 11, and with how often I'm up that late it would be good to know.

Not that I know of. We typically make runs to the Karl's Jr. on Colorado all night long for spicy chicken sandwiches though. Only the drivethru is open that late though.

I get depressed whenever I go there nowadays since it's a sign I'm up late doing problem sets. :( Oh well, guess I can always hop in my car and hit the Denny's a bit farther east on Colorado. I've sat there a few times doing problem sets all night and they didn't seem to mind much.

it's kinda sketch though (that denny's)

Man, you guys have such high standards out here. You should have seen some of the Eat'n Parks I had been to in Western PA.

(Protip: Going into a diner in a small town at 4 AM when the only other customers are cops means you're getting tailed until you get back on the highway.)

Wokcano in Old Pas is open until 2AM/4AM.

But they are incredibly pricey. But- open!

Winchell's is open all night! And it's within close walking distance (intersection of California and Lake). : )

Winchells is not what I would call food.

It is when you don't have a car and it's two in the morning!

Eating donuts when hungry makes me so sick though... it's just pure sugar and fat. I'd rather eat Carl's Jr. than winchell's any day. It's pretty easy to get people with cars to do Carl's runs at 2 in the morning.

I'll keep that in mind.

Anyhow, CC is not the place to debate the nutrition content of donuts versus spicy chicken sandwiches. To each his own. The moral of the story is, if you're looking for food late at night, Pasadena has some options that keep Techers happy enough.

Are you sure? I am totally happy debating the nutrition content of donuts vs spicy chicken. It's way more interesting than "what are my chances".

Conrads, on Lake a couple blocks south of the 210, serves real food 24 hours a day.

...and is frequented by awesome old ladies! I was there once with a group of guy friends (about eight, and we were all sitting at a huge corner booth table) and this grandmother type walks by, surveys our table, looks at me, and says, "How did you get all of these MEN?"

The answer: the ratio.
