Colleges catching cheaters

I agree with Proteinman. I catch someone almost every semester and I have to say many of my colleagues kind of give me a blank stare and ask how I do it. I teach non-credit writing (and you have to ask what kind of a dope would cheat in a class that’s only purpose is to help you improve–duh). And I am not so egotistical to think that my students have learned so much through my guidance that by the end of the semester they can write like professionals. It just doesn’t happen that fast.

This statement is so true. It is apparent at the most fundamental levels of education and is very noticeable at the high school level. Students these days believe that everything in their life will be handed to them, those who are in decent economic conditions anyway. Cheating is a fact of life in education now. It always appears to be the path of least resistance, and nothing can be done about it at its most basic levels (like copying a homework problem). I’m pretty sure everyone is guilty of some form of cheating these days, but I think as a whole there is more aggressive cheating now than ever before.

Another issue is ( i hate to bring this into the discussion) our government is doing nothing to help this mentality. They preach how everyone is entitled to health care and the other benefits to society as if they come free which sounds good to most people who do not choose to look at the real cost. The govt supported those who wanted risky loans which led people to believe that they deserved the nice houses and cars when they really couldn’t afford them. This feeling of entitlement and sheer lack of a willingness to work for these luxuries will ultimately lead to the demise of the U.S. like collegebound_guy said.

@collegebound_guy Congratulations, you win the dumbass award.

2.There is nothing wrong with athletics and sports. In fact, it HELD TOGETHER a thousand-year long empire (the Romans). Check out the World Cup, and you’ll see that sports = moar people live because less bombs and stuff.

Work ethic is NOT declining. Look at all those people in Silicon Valley working their asses off for the benefit of technology etc. Look at all these people slaving over books to do well on their SATs! I can’t believe you’re actually saying people are getting lazier… this being America, there’s always a generation of very hard working immigrants who’ll try hard to go to college and be successful. That statement is completely false.

meh. You get a half pass on this one. But sources pl0x?

I think that sports on the international level at least are good because they allow people to compete for national pride outside of warfare.
