Colleges for a kid who isn't quite sure...

...what he wants.

I am heading to college in the fall, but my brother who is 2yrs younger than me is beginning to get close to the start of the college search process. My parents are busy and don't really have time to visit schools with him (I only visited about 3, and that was on my own) so I was planning on trying to take him to some this summer if possible so he can get a feel of some different places. Once I leave it will be harder to do this, so I wanted to try and get a head start. He and I are very different, and he has absolutely no idea where he might want to go, so I'm hoping some of you guys might have some ideas of where he might be interested.

He isn't a typical CC'er, but is not a bad student. I don't know his exact GPA, but it is somewhere in the 3.5-3.8 range I would imagine, from what I have seen of his grades.

He has not yet taken the SAT but his PSAT scored indicate a score somewhere around mid 1100- mid 1200 for a score (out of 1400).

He goes to a very small private high school that has very rigorous honors program, but no AP's.

His teachers all love him and would give him very good rec's.

He hasn't a clue what he wants to major in, although I imagine it will end up being something along the lines of business. For a long time he wanted to be an architect, but then took geometry and didn't like it very much and scrapped that idea.

He also really likes making videos with iMovie on his computer, so maybe he'll end up doing related to that, like digital programming, or graphic design?

He has decent volunteer hours, plays the violin and a little guitar, and has been involved in some theater productions through the school.

What he thinks he might like in a school are the following: (Obviously it may be impossible to match perfectly, but if the schools could match some of these, it would be nice)

-He would rather be hot than cold, so he doesn't really want a bitter climate, but he could probably deal with it if everything else was good.

-He doesn't want something terribly small, but I worry that he'd get lost if a school was too large, especially since he does have trouble being social and networking sometimes, so maybe medium sized? A bigger LAC?

-He doesn't want something completely in the middle of nowhere, he'd like to be within a few hours of a major city.

-East Coast is better, we are from VA, but he's open to anything, really.

-Will not qualify for need based fin-aid, so that's not an issue.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but if more information is needed I can try and come up with it.

Some to possibly look at are Loyola (MD), Christopher Newport, Elon, Mary Washington and College of Charleston.

Your brother is lucky to have you looking out for him! :)

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but here are a few schools that came to mind after reading your introduction.

Universities:
College of William and Mary (more LAC than straight Uni, but it is a Uni)
Boston College
Lehigh University
Villanova University
Wake Forest University
Bucknell University

LACs:
Davidson College
The College of New Jersey (TCNJ for short; public LAC)

I realize that his grades and anticipated scores may not be at the top of the schools listed above, but I believe all of the above schools are within reach, especially if he is able to communicate a strong desire to attend, compose creative and unique essays, and keep a positive grade trend.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely pass them on. I'm afraid if I don't get him going he'll never get on the ball and end up unhappy. He doesn't adjust overly well, and so I want him to really want to be wherever he ends up.

Heh. I'll probably wait a while, maybe until late tonight or tomorrow though... he is very moody today. I might not come away unscathed! He missed his calling as a PMSing Girl...

Jahn's list is good, but many (such as Boston College, Bucknell, Villanova, and Lehigh) are in what may be considered bitterly cold climates.

Elon should be a really good fit, however. It just seems to have everything he's looking for. I'd also recommend Tulane.
