Colleges for me?

Alright I'm a senior from Illinois and I go to a small HS. My highest act score is a 29, but I'm still taking it two more times. I have a 4.0 GPA but after this semester it will probably go down a bit because I'm getting a B in AP chem. I'm ranked 2/100. I'm going to major in civil or mechanical engineering and have already been accepted to Alabama, Missouri S & T, SIUC, and SIUE. I'm also looking into Bradley. I'm trying to find other schools I could apply to but they need to have decent scholarships as well as recognition. Nothing extremely far away but like I said I'm interested in alabama so distance isn't a huge deal. I'm also trying to find a few colleges that might be a stretch getting into ( not university of Chicago or champaign). Thanks CC!

How much merit do you need? How much will your parents pay?

Are you taking the SAT, too?

(So far, you have a half tuition scholarship to Bama - about $11k per year. Have you rec’d that award yet? If you get a 30, you’ll get free tuition (combo school and eng’g awards plus 2500 per year.).

@mom2collegekids that’s actually the reason I’m taking the ACT again. If I get a 30 I would most likely attend Alabama, but I just wanted some other ideas in case I couldn’t pull a 30.

Take the SAT as well. sometimes it’s easier to get that 1330 M+CR.

what is your low section on the ACT?

Science is what always gives me problems. I’m not sure why though because when I take practice tests at home I get anywhere from a 28-32 yet when I take the test my highest is a 26. All other categories are fine except that. Should I sign up for the November SAT? Would it be easier to get the score needed for Alabama engineering scholarship?

Ask your college advisor- they know you better!

Well, since the SAT doesn’t have a Science section, I think that might work out for you.

However, be warned…the math on the ACT is more straight-forward, while the math on the SAT can be more tricky…so be sure to answer EXACTLY what the question asks for and in the form it asks for.

Yes, 30 ACT or 1330 SAT would get you the full tuition scholarship at Alabama (and big scholarships at several other schools).

Your current 29 ACT with 4.0 GPA would get you a full ride at Prairie View A&M and full tuition at Florida A&M and Howard.

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is fairly low cost for out-of-state students, so it may be worth a look even if you don’t get scholarships there. South Dakota State University is even lower cost.

Thanks everyone for all of the advice!
