I had a feeling you were a guy. My S was in a production of FAME with her just before she left for Hartt. He played Joe Vegas. I was also part of the production staff. Last email I got from her she seemed very happy at Hartt. Hard to believe the time is going so fast and she is a Junior already. Please tell her my S and I say hi. Hartt was one of the programs he was accepted to but he chose to go to CMU. He is in his second year there, (acting BFA).

Hello, I'm a 6-month lurker, 1st time poster. Huge thanks to all who have created this living encyclopedia on MT education, and best wishes (or broken legs) to all seniors currently auditioning. My jr D is looking at summer MT/VP programs. We have seen mentions on here of a summer program at OCU, but their web site is not clear. All I've found is something called "Vocal Arts Academy Residence Camp" under the Performing Arts Academy section of their site. Is this the "official" OCU MT summer program run out of the music school? It is described as a 2-week session for high school students. No application or admission info is posted (that I can find). Would appreciate any info about OCU summer. Thanks!

OCU Summer Program

mwparent....what you have found on the OCU site under their Performing Arts Academy is indeed the summer camp. The best way to get information is through JoBeth Moad who heads the Academy. I believe you'll find her email address on that part of the site somewhere. If I remember correctly (and my D attended this past summer) they sent a brochure and an application out in the spring. We had to fill out the application and provide a audio tape of D singing maybe one MT song and one art song? You should have plenty of time to get information and fill out the application. And I believe if you met a deadline they set, there was a reduction in the cost of the camp by $100 or so. Hope that helps!

mwparent - JoBeth Moad at OCU can be reached at jmoad@okcu.edu or by phone at 405-521-5410. I had a nice visit with her on the phone in mid-Dec., but I called again last week, and they may be out for Christmas break. She sent me a small brochure but will send a bigger packet in the spring. We heard about it when we visited OCU in Oct. My son who is a junior is probably doing their summer program. It is 3 weeks July 11 - 30. Not sure how much detail is on the web. Hope we see you there!
I have my First audition in one week! (Syracuse, Jan 4th 9AM, in chicago. Anyone gonna be there?) It's hard to believe that after about a year researching about schools and working on my audition material that the most important step is finally here. I'm so excited and anxious at the same time. Good luck to everyone else when auditions start back up soon!

My D is auditioning for Syracuse in LA. She has dozens of questions about how it will be conducted, so if you have time after your audition, please fill us in on how it went. For example, will the same auditor see her monologue and her songs? Is there one dance audition for the day or two? How many people were in the dance audition? By the way, have you visited the campus? Break a leg - - Hoofermom

Has anyone heard of someone making it big out there without majoring in Drama? I mean, are their people on Broadway who majored in something other than musical theater? My situation is I've always loved theater and chorus and have participated throughout high school, but haven't been fully submersed in it till this year when I chose theater over soccer. I realize that it would be foolish to try to jump into a musical theater audition this late in the game, but if I work on my own, through non-major classes and private lessons and such, is there a possibility that theater may be in my future?

Hoofermom, I'd be glad to reply with any information but after my audition I have to travel 3 hours to U of I to perform in the Illinois All State show (anyone here going to Illinois Theatre Fest?) and I wont be back till late saturday night. If I get baack before there auditions in LA then Ill post my audition experience, Good Luck

Haven't posted here more than once or twice and that was quite awhile ago. My D is only a sophomore this year, so mostly I lurk and gather valuable info! I live in Syracuse, however, so can 't help with audition information, but can give you some first hand info about Syracuse. The university itself isn't huge like Michigan, but not small either. Anyone who comes here must be prepared for winter to last almost the whole school year. No kidding. We usually start getting some snow in October and can't count on it stopping completely until May. It is almost always gray skies during those months, apparently because of Lake Ontario?? anyway, if you can get past the weather (you can tell I didn't grow up here...came from Boston area where at least the sky is blue sometimes in winter) it is a terrifc place to be. The theater department is VERY good. My D was in a show there in 1998 (Carousel, as one of the Snow Children) and the faculty and students she worked with couldn't have been nicer and were incredibly talented. Since then we have seen several productions including Secret Garden, Into the Woods, I Love You You're Perfect Now Change, Damn Yankees, as well as several where the S.U. Drama department has collaborated with the professional theater Syracuse Stage which is housed in the same building with a bigger theater including Oliver, and this weekend we will see Big River. Every show we have seen has been fantastic. And the S.U. students consistently blow us away! We always leave the theater saying we can't believe they are only college students! We see a lot of theater in our area, including a lot at Merry-go-Round Playhouse which is also professional theater, since we have the MT obsessed daughter and we enjoy it, and we have been to NYC several times to see shows on Broadway, and still, we are never disappointed at S.U. So I'm sure the quality of the training is excellent. Of course my D is going to audition there in a couple of years, and of course she isn't sure she wants to go there because it's right HERE, but she/we don't for a minute question the quality of the program and she would be delighted to get accepted there. (we should be so lucky!) I still question the weather though! lol. But you learn to survive and even enjoy it sometimes. If nothing else, we usually get some good coverage on the weather channel!

There are hundreds of people on Broadway and in Film/TV did NOT go to school for it. The Musical Theatre BFA did not even really come into play until about 30 years ago. I am sure if you have hard work and dedication as well as drive, you will do what you want to do.

Thanks for the advice CHB. I know this field is so incredibly unpredictable and with determination, anything is possible, but it's just discouraging sometimes to know how much of a "head start" all these talented people have. Good luck to all at college auditions by the way!

my d auditioned for mt at ocu and as i've posted previously, we've been offered acceptance and scholarship to the theater performance program. after several days of nothing from the music dept., i finally called our admissions counselor on december 22 and after checking, was informed she was not accepted into mt. however, we still have not received any mail from the music department. dr. herendeen seems to be out right now so we can't get any info. just wondered if anyone else received acceptance into one program but just didn't get anything from the music department. we're a little confused.......jamie

Hi! I was reading your post. My cousin goes to Hartt as an MT major; initials LN. Do you know her? She just cut a CD.

Rossj,
Is LN a senior? If so, she is my daughter's roomate. Small world. : )

I'm sure many of you heard that Jerry Orbach died yesterday. I haven't been sadder about the passing of a colleague in a long time. Our younger posters only know him as Lenny Briscoe on LAW AND ORDER (or as Jennifer Grey's father in the film DIRTY DANCING) but those of you who've been around for awhile may know that he began in musical theatre. He was the original El Gallo in THE FANTASTICKS, the original Paul (the puppeteer) in that wonderful and too infrequently done musical, CARNIVAL!, the original Billy Flynn in CHICAGO, the original Chuck Baxter in PROMISES, PROMISES (for which he won a Tony). I encourage you to read the obituary in The NY Times at

and to go to Amazon.com (search on his name) and listen to some of his clips. He was the model of a modern working American actor, and he was a mensch. We'll miss him.

Jerry Orbach will be missed by all. He crossed many generations. My D, who is only 17, was first introduced thru Law & Order. After learning about his past work, she asked for CD's of his musicals. My mom, who is 72, is also a big fan. Rarely does an actor cross many generations. Even rarer that he did it in live theater, film, and TV. I was looking forward to his new Law and Order Series. It won't be the same without him.

Yes, I believe so! She's actually my husband's cousin; I only met her once. Sadly, her grandfather (who she lived with) passed away recently; my husband went to the funeral - I had to work. Is this the same girl? If so, she might be proud to know that SHE was the one who got my daughter interested in theater! My d is 17 now and met her at a bridal shower about 8 years ago. She was in awe of her since she had performed on Broadway in Carousel and then and there decided that's what SHE wanted to do! She actually wrote her college essay about LN describing how she first got interested in the theater! My d was just accepted to CAP21 (she really wants to be in NYC) although Hartt was on her list of schools, too. We have LN's phone # at school, but my d is too shy to call her; her Mom told her to call with any questions on auditioning for schools, about Hartt, etc. but she never did :( (Go figure; she can perform in front of 1500 people, but is too shy to call her cousin!) Tell her that we LOVE listening to her CD; she has a BEAUTIFUL voice, and we hope to see her soon! My husband's initials are SR.

Doctorjohn,

Thanks for passing along the Jerry Orbach obit. My D and I heard the news while driving in the car yesterday. When I heard her gasp at the news, it made me realize how connected she has become to the entire MT world. She recited a long list of his credits and actually knew more about him as a stage actor than as a TV and film star. She has always loved the Fantastiks and apparently they've discussed his work in Brent Wagner's class at Michigan. She was impressed to hear that I had actually seen him in the original run of Carnival (with a very young Anna Maria Alberghetti) when it came thru Philadelphia, pre Broadway. My parents always had what was then called a "Drama Guild" subscription and Philadelphia was still a tryout town. When I think back to all of the great classic shows I saw, it brings back wonderful memories. Jerry Orbach was a classic from, sadly, another era. I miss both that time and will miss his work. It's a sad day on Broadway.
