Colleges for Musical Theatre-Part 38

UMMM.....I WENT THROUGH THE SAME THING AND WORKED A LOT AS A YOUNG PERFORMER....mAKE SURE HE IS TRAINING WITH A GREAT VIOCE TEACHER THAT KNOWS ABOUT MALE VIOCES, ITS VERY IMPORTANT....IF HIS TEACHER TRIES TO CREATE A "FAKE" SOUNDING DARK SOUND, I IS PROBABLY GONNA HURT HIM. WHERE DID U HEAR U OF MICH WAS THE BEST FROM..I HEARD IT 5 YEARS AGO FROM MY AGNET IN NYC NANCY CARSON-AND SHES DEF A CREDIBLE SOURCE. I WAS JUST ACCEPTED TO U OF MICH. IM SO EXITED-SOP ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK....MIKE

Mike-- It's Dani, Mara's friend!! lol, "tall freckly red head kid" put it together for me! Small world- congratulations on Michigan!! How are you?!?! I missed you at Seussical- hehe. Anyway, ttyl- congrats again!! Hope to see you sometime!! xoxo.

Hey MIke....Ummm i didnt warm up with you...but i ahve brown hair, long. Was wearing a white skirt, and a black sweater with black boots. I believe I met you on a street corner in front of Starbucks after the audition. COngrats though! I a guessing I am on the waiting list at this point since i ahvent heard...that seems to be the concensus or I mean deferred I suppose

DizzyDani88, You asked about Brown and Vassar on one of the threads. I sent emails to the heads of acting at some of the top MFA schools asking about BA vs BFA yada, yada along with a list of schools I am looking at. The ones that mentioned undergrad programs in their replies said they like talent they see from both those schools. Almost all the ones that responded also said they recommend a well rounded BA for undergrad. Two of them said they like kids they see from the Evansville BFA program and another mentioned Southern Methodist. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone I'm Caroline I'm new to this thread but I just wanted to say hello and also just put my name out there for any high school seniors (or younger ) who are in the process of auditioning/selecting a school. My mom, although she never posted, used this site last year when I was applying to schools and recommended that I put up a post. Since I just went through the stressful process last year and I'd be more than happy to talk to anyone who has any questions. I know a decent amount about the schools I applied to (CCM, BOCO, Ithaca-not as much as the others, U of M, and Point Park) as you can tell by my user name I decided to attend Point Park. However, I had an extensive college search and am pretty knowledgeable about most of the schools mentioned on the Big List. (i.e.: program strengths, teaching style, and in some cases actual #s that they accept) If I can't help you out with a specific question I have a bunch of friends all over the east coast in schools for musical theater who I'd be more than happy to refer you to. I hope everyone's college experiences are going well! Feel free to email me at Caro8604@aol.com any time if you have any questions.

My D is a junior and we're looking to plan our spring break college visits. I appreciate all of your posts about schools that offer mt majors. It's pretty hard to track down in the regular college guides. Most don't have it as a topic.

Can you tell me more about the unified auditions? I know that my D will have auditions at the International Thespian Conference in Lincoln in June.

Thanks
Susan

Well, it certainly is a small world! My S and D have the same NY agent, Nancy Carson and you are right, she's the one who said U of M was the best. She said of all the kids who do showcases in NYC the ones from Michigan are the best prepared for work. I'm a little curious who you would suggest for a great voice teacher. We actually live in Michigan and at the moment my husband is working with our S. He's a professional coach and voice teacher who has had kids on Broadway and in regional shows but we'd be willing to have our S work with someone else. Seeing that you are only a year older than my S I'm wondering what shows you've done. S did Beauty and the Beast (1st National), Les Miz (3rd National and Broadway) and Ragtime (Ist National) before his voice broke. I'd appreciate any insight you might have that might help S with his audition at UMich. By the way, did Nancy write one of your recommendations? She said she'd be willing to write one for S but I don't know if that is a good idea. Congrats on getting into U of M!!!!

ricsmom- Thank you for the Indiana information. A local director who is very involved in musical theater actually graduated from IU and loved it. Based on your review and some of the other positives I've heard about the program, it has been added to the list of schools to research.

freelance-You talked about USC- now that's a school I haven't heard frequently mentioned on this board. I'd love to go to California. But, I don't think the 'rents are ready to let me go that far. Actually, funny enough, I had to sit down with my dad for about an hour and a half convincing him to let me take an amtrak train (a plane, he said, was not an option) with another friend to go see my best friend in North Carolina who's in "Blood Brothers" there. I finally got him to say yes, but it was clear that he needs to take baby steps in this whole "letting go" process.

Lynnm- Wow. Thank you. That means so much. I'm finding that my path isn't as clear to me as I'd like it to be. In fact, the whole process is sort of "dizzy"ing, haha. And ignorance, in this case, is definately not bliss. I figure the more I know, the more informed a decision I'll be making when applying to programs. Hopefully learning as much as I can will help me to end up in the right place. Thank you again for your kindness.

Well, I have no passed the four week mark since my audition at Michigan (I auditioned on Jan 14). I have still yet to hear anything. Does anyone know what this could possibly mean? Am I being deferred? I know there were more auditions on Jan 28 and Feb 4, so maybe they held off on making a decision about me. How much longer must I wait?

My d just asked me to ask everyone this question: if one is auditioning for a role and truly does not want to understudy or ensemble because of other opportunities available during that time period, is it okay to be truthful and write on the audition form that one isn't interested in the other parts? Or is it the kiss of death and one needs to put the show (no matter what part) ahead of any other opportunities--or not audition?

MTaussie, I am getting really confused but I just got back from NYU auditions and sat with mom and son from Detroit and so much of what you just wrote in your post fits except where you imply your son is a junior and asked for any advice regarding the UM audition as if it has not yet occurred (his had). But so much else in your post fits our conversation today and so now I'm thinking, you are not who I talked with in NYC today. My post is likely not making sense. Also, that person was not going back to Detroit until tomorrow. You might even know them if you are not them. The conversation regarding N.C. was identical to our conversation today, as my D is with the same person. This person had a child who has done Ragtime on tour too but it was her D, not her S. Ah, you can't be the same.

They said 2-4 weeks. It has officially been 4 weeks and still no word!!!

I'm with you collegebound, what does this mean?? I've been hanging by a thread and now I'm just annoyed. I think it's time to call.

Broadway32nd,

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes schools longer than promised to deliver their decisions. Last year my D auditioned on Nov. 14. She was told by MT faculty when she visited the campus the previous April that she would hear her result within around 2 weeks following the audition. The day of her audition, the director of School of Music admissions told her that the goal was to get all results mailed before U.M. let out for winter break. We expected to hear something before Christmas. She didn't get her letter until Jan. 11. You can do the math; that was nearly 2 months after her audition. I know someone else on this forum who had an audition the same day who got her letter about the same time. I know some people have gotten their results from the Jan. audition. I wish I could tell you what it means that you have not heard anything.

Mike
How aweome you got in. We auditioned with you. You have a beautiful voice. Best of luck to you. My son has heard nothing yet>

soozieVT--

Can you tell me a bit more about the NYU audition? I'm auditioning there on the 24th and it would be great to have as much information as possible before I get there.

What was the atmosphere like? Can you describe the process a bit more? Is there anything you wish you knew before you got there? I'm auditioning for acting, so it will be a bit different, but it would be lovely to know what to expect.

Thanks!

It was about this time last year when my son did the Tisch drama audition w advanced dance. Sign in required that the auditioner indicate monologue selection (be sure to know name of play and playwright) also name of musical selection(s)?, I believe.
The dance portion was first. My son who has had a fair amount of dance found it to be fun, but remembers one combination giving him a little bit of trouble.
Most auditioners changed clothes, then parents and students met with the Drama Dept chair who explained the various studios. Auditioners were divided into two groups, each with a different auditioner. After a brief delay students auditioned one at a time. Each met briefly wth the auditioner and indicated studio preference and whether he/she would like to indicate a second choice. My son's auditioner suggested a second choice studio that he thought would be a good match. (Until moments before entering the audition room, my son planned to say "Cap 21 only." Changed his mind at the door and said he would also like to be considered for other studios). My son was lucky to be the first in his group to audition, so we didn't wait around for long. I do recall that they asked if you have a time crunch (flight out etc. please let them know so they can accomodate). Everyone was very nice and informative. Students seemed to be more nervous than for their other auditions (according to the chatting parents).
These are approximate details; some of the day is a little blurry.
Good luck and have fun. My son is very busy this year (in Playwrights), but is having a great time and learning an amazing amount of theater.

My son auditioned for the musical theatre at Steinhardt
It is about a 10 minute audition
He sang two songs and did his monoloque and some sight singing and theory.
3 people in the room judged. Everything was done in that room

we live in Calif and my son auditioned on the 14th. We have heard nothing. but we have a girl friend who also auditioned on the 14th from calif and she got rejected.

That is so funny!!!!!
I never thought that the world was that small....Yes NANCY is obsessed with michigan and i trust her opinion. I might have to make a decition between mich and cmu, which will be the hardest decision of my life-but ill cross that bridge when i come to it. My vioce teacher/coach is Matt Farsnworth, but i know that he is like impossible to get a coaching with and has turned down many grads recently because he is to busy. But i do know that BOB MARKS is great for guys, along with KIM STERN. you can google the both of them to see if they have websites. ALso for coachings solely...MIKE LAVINE is great...hes a great freind of mine, you can call him for coaching, (another perk, he is a great friend of Brent Wagner-head of U. of MIch prgram.) His number is 212-362-5101....mention mike kelton when u call. Um, i would recommend having music ready to perform when you go to any of those people. I hope this helps. I worked more when i was younger, and had trouble as I got older because of my hieght...im 6'3'' and have been so scine i was 13. But now I have grown into myself and have been asuditioning right up there along with grads 20 year olds and up. I just went in for GOOD VIBS. I also went in for HAIRSSPRAY this summer. I got close with both, but my lack of training and age always becomes an issue at some piont. ANyway nice to talk to you...if u speak to nancy tell her mike say hello and u can tell her i got in, because i havent been in tuch with her in a while. GOdd luck! GO BLUE!
mike kelton

no..nancy did not write one of my reccomendations. I really had no connections to the school besides my two freidns that r freshman in the program. I feel it would be very benifitioal for her to write your son a reccomendation. But i do feel that a recoomendation isnt gona change any decition.....I feel that ur singin then acting then dancing is what they decide on..and scince they accept so few..its like an it factor that nobody can explain..nor can I!!!!!!!!!! I am stil confused as to why i got in....but i do feel honored~
