Colleges for my Major

I know that I definitely want to major in neuroscience, more specifically cognitive neuroscience, and I was wondering if anyone knew any universities that are known for their science and/or neuroscience programs?

I’ve already recognized that Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, University of Miami, and Vanderbilt as some of the best neuroscience schools in the country. Am I missing any other key universities that would benefit my majoring hopes?

many, many good ones; neuroscience is quite commonly found at flagships, mid-sized unis, and now LACs.

Do you have the mojo and moolah to get into the four schools you’ve named?

I believe that my academics will definitely help me get in, and I’m focusing on scholarships and financial aid. @jkeil911‌

that’s pretty vague, OP, so I’ll name some schools you might consider but aren’t thinking of because they are beneath your horizon: Pitt, Bard, Case Western, Brandeis, Boulder, Lehigh, Ohio State, Richmond, Temple, Tulane, Vermont. There are many more.

As of right now I’m not really focused on the money aspects. Yes, I take that into consideration, but I’m more focused on actually getting in first, because there is always a way to deal with money. However, I’m not sure if I will be able to pay for any one of these colleges. I will definitely look at the ones that you’ve named! Thank you! @jkeil

OP, a little advice. You can find out the likelihood of being able to pay for any college! Each school has a net price calculator on its webpage. Based on your parents’ income and assets, it will give you an approximation of what you would have to pay each year at that school. Use these npcs. They are great time-savers because you’re not going anywhere you cannot afford. The money won’t just appear from nowhere. Outside scholarships are nearly useless for more than 99% of applicants and usually are good for only one year. You need to apply to schools that you can afford: these will be schools who might offer you enough need-based or merit-based aid (that’s what the two kinds are called, and many schools will offer you one or the other unless your parents’ income is very low) that combined with your parents’ contribution will be enough to enable you to go there. This is the “way to deal with the money.” It ain’t magic, more like realpolitik.

if you’re still listening, no one but you and your family cares where you went to school. Employers won’t care unless they’re on Wall Street; grad schools and law schools won’t care; med schools in particular won’t care.

College is about your GPA and what experiences you have there, including internships, study abroad, leadership opps, etc., NOT where you go. Chances are you’ll get a graduate degree and then NO ONE will care where you went to undergrad but you. Come back and ask some more questions when you need help.

Uh…not really, no. Sometimes there is no way to deal with money. I agree that your initial list shouldn’t pay attention to cost considerations, but after you have an initial list you should talk to your parents and see how much they can pay. Cost is going to shape your list somewhat - you might want to add colleges that have big merit programs for people with your stats or subtract competitive colleges that don’t meet 100% of need and aren’t great with merit aid.

Emory has a great neuroscience major (it’s called neuroscience and behavioral biology - NBB).

But like others said - there are a lot of colleges that offer neuroscience as a major, and still more that would allow you to craft that specialization out of psychology and biology courses.

Penn - Biological Basis of Behavior http://www.sas.upenn.edu/bbb/

Brown http://brownuniversityneurodug.webflow.com/

Hmmmm… “Definitely get into Columbia, JHU, and Vanderbilt”

@qpqpqp‌ Those are my top three choices but I have every doubt about being accepted at any of these universities.

I am also looking to go into neuroscience (I am a HS junior) it’s nice to see others interested in the same field. you could add Yale to the list and UW-Madison. Hopefully you succeed in whatever path you go on.

Thank you for your suggestions; I’ll make sure I look at them! And same to you! @mhall24‌
