Colleges for smart but "under-achieving" student

It’s hard to say how much of this is “normal” and how much is reaction to a controlling parent. One thought is that she could be bored in school. She clearly is bright. Regardless, she needs to keep her grades up as much as she can, and soon she will be in college. Looks like she has some good choices, and hopefully will get accepted into several schools. I hope this works out well for her. She’s lucky to have you for support.

Was Guilford College suggested?

That doesn’t sound familiar so I don’t think so… I’ll pass it along :)

If I’m not mistaken, Guilford is a Friends school. It is a small, very nurturing environment…located in Greensboro NC.

It’s one of the “Colleges that Change Lives”. However, if she wants to be closer to home, there are some on this list in your region that she may want to include.

I wanted to pass along some good news- she got into her first college! The University of Iowa!

She did not apply to the music school there yet, but she applied as an English (eventually the Creative Writing track) major. She does want to pursue music but isn’t sure that she wants to major in it. She hadn’t even considered Iowa until I brought it up (because of this thread). She was SO excited on the phone- it was wonderful to hear :D

Wonderful! Tell her congratulations. I hope she knows how lucky she is to have you in her life.

University of Iowa is a great school, and one that doesn’t get as much attention here as I think it deserves. Congrats to your sister!

Thank you both :).

Sally, she isn’t my sister.

3.5 and 28 -> Ohio State or Miami.

Oh, sorry! I am on my phone and too lazy to go back through the thread. My congrats still stand. :)

Not a problem haha.

t3nnis, thank you for the suggestion but she has no interest in OSU and has completed her apps at this point I believe. :)

Where is she likely headed?

She has only gotten into one college so far so I have no idea.
As of now, Iowa lol.

Sorry, where do you think she’s headed?

… I can’t know or even make a guess if I don’t know where she’s going to get in.

Strong match + her personal preference doesn’t leave any standing out from the pack of potentials? Does she have a dream school?

Sorry to keep bumping but I promised some people via PMs and on here that I would update.

She has now gotten into Iowa, Michigan State, and Baldwin-Wallace.

She is waiting on a few others but Iowa and MSU were her two top picks. Her parents are both MSU alumni and she really liked the program that I was in there.

I am beaming with pride for her :D

She sounds like a great fit for Arizona State - GO DEVILS!

She doesn’t want to be in a warm climate… lol.
Anyway, it’s between Iowa and MSU unless someone out of nowhere offers something amazing (I honestly don’t know where else she applied).
