Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Hello and welcome.

Have you tried contacting someone at RIT through FB or with this link:

http://www.rithillel.org/index.htm</a></p>

http://www.rit.edu/studentaffairs/religion/hillel.php</a></p>

You can also follow on Twitter:

I don’t know much about the Jewish population at RIT - would actually be surprised if it was very low as University of Rochester has a strong Jewish presence.

"We estimate that there are between 300 and 400 Jewish undergraduate students enrolled at the Rochester Institute of Technology " - quote from 2012 version of Hillel webpage. That’s not a terribly low number if there is an active group of students.

Looks like there is a Chanbad House also:

http://www.chabad.org/centers/default_cdo/aid/294605/jewish/Rochester-Institute-of-Technology.htm</a></p>

Sorry to not have more insight.

Does anyone have any personal knowledge about York College of PA? Yorks website says 2% jewish which isnt a lot They have SDT and DPhiE sororities but from their websites they dont look they are primarily (or at all) jewish. They do have a hillel though but cant find a website for it. Any info anyone may have would be great.

We happen to have friends at RIT and York whose sons are Jewish. We also know another Jewish boy that just graduated from RIT this past year. The other one at RIT is a freshman. The one at York is a senior. Don’t know anything about their personal involvements at the colleges, but my suggestion is to just call the schools and ask. I would imagine RIT (Hillel) does get together with Univ. of Rochester, which has a very large Jewish presence, including one of my nephews. York may get together with nearby colleges too, just don’t know offhand. Best to call the school directly and ask.

^^^Oh. my. goodness. See what cc does to me? I swore I was going to sign off from cc when my post count hit 1,000. Now it’s at 2,000 and I’m still here. Yikes. This website is addictive X_X

Stick around for another few thousand!

^^Thanks a LOT RVM! :stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome handlmom. I do not have any personal info on York College - it was actually on my list to investigate for S2 4 years ago - but we never got there. I did see a link for fraternity ZBT with contact info - might be worth an email:

http://www.ycp.edu/offices-and-services/student-activities-and-orientation/greek-life/fraternities/zeta-beta-tau/</a></p>

Yes, everyone needs to stay. We could have a CC 12 step group, but not give up the addiction!!

RVM:
Any new news on boysx3’s condition? Hopefully she’s stable. Then once she’s stable, she can take baby steps to recovery.
Cannot believe S1 is a senior already. He’s already interviewing for jobs, yikes. Looking into Birthright for S2. The ball keeps rolling and rolling. Just yesterday they were running around in diapers! Okay, maybe not yesterday, but you get the point!

In another thread, I think RVM may have reported that boysx3 is moving to rehab, which is a good sign.

ShawWife is heading to Friends and Family Shabbat dinner this Friday night. ShawD is head of Hillel. I’m going to miss it as I’ll be flying back from South America.

Hi - boysx3 is improving after that scare last week. Her infections have improved enough that she was moved back to the rehabilitation facility from the hospital. Hopefully she will resume all of the therapies that were underway and her family will have a better idea of what type of recovery is feasible.

Great news, RVM. Thanks for the update.

Great update regarding boysx3.
My S who is turning 25 soon and my D who is 20 are trying to get it together to do a Birthright trip before he ages out. My oldest never got it together and before she knew it she was 27.

mom60, we gotta do something about our matching avatar photos…

Mom60, have your son and daughter register the day it opens. I tried to do Birthright last year but signed up too late and all the tripd were full. This year I signed up the minute we were allowed to and easily got a spot.

I wondered if trips might be less popular this year. I have gotten tons of email encouraging me to sign up… I’m not sure why I’m getting them, I’m decades past 26!

I’m so happy to hear that boysx3 is making progress. I can only imagine how difficult the recovery is but am glad to hear she is on the mend.

Re: Birthright trips - my understanding is that it is easier to get spots on winter trips the first try but that summer sometimes takes 2 cycles. Also, so nice that your kids are trying to go together, mom60. I was in Israel this summer & talked to 2 brothers the night after they finished their Birthright trip together. They said they bonded in a really great way & had a blast. Makes me think I may tell my oldest to wait until his brother is eligible (next year) so they can go together.

Speaking of S2…he just received acceptance to U of MN so he knows he will go to college next year. He had an amazing visit to the Ohio State & that is #1 on his list right now. We will see if he gets the out of state scholarship $$. He has also applied to Northeastern in Boston & Miami of Ohio.

I want him to finish his U of IL (urbana/Champaign) - application. It’s our state flagship & a great school but to do Computer Science major & not be in engineering (which he does not want to do - S1 is ECE at u of IL & its really tough academically…) he must double major. Right now he is thinking Computer Science & Anthropology. does anyone know anything about this program?

Does anyone have a child at Virginia Tech? We visited the Hillel at VT last spring after our tour, but I want to make sure my daughter will feel comfortable on campus if she attends next fall.

Just returned from a tour and interview at Carnegie Mellon for my son. Really nice Hillel there which is shared by neighboring University of Pittsburgh. Someone had a great idea to share the Hillel years ago. According to the director, it works out great for everyone.

we had the same reaction when we visited CMU for S1. We liked that a lot of the “campus” town is shared between the 2 schools.
