Hello, I want to major in international relations and political science. I am from the US but love traveling and stepping out of my comfort zone. I am also interested in a variety of issues surrounding IR. I would like to go to school in the UK but am quite unfamiliar with their school system. What is the difference between unis there and here? I have heard that they are far stricter with what classes you take and you generally have far less electives…? What is the atmosphere generally more like there vs here?
The academic part is easy to find online.
In general, in English uni, you only study the subject(s) you signed up for and most programs are 3 years long. You have a little bit more flexibility at Scottish unis and they are 4 years long.
^ Basically, you get a broader education in the US, and an education perhaps more focused on your major in the U.K.
You basically have NO electives outside your chosen subject (or combination of subjects).
What is the atmosphere like? Are they as nurturing as they are here?
LACs here, you mean?
Typically no. They expect a student to be independent and be able to take charge of their own education.
