Admissions Committee

Subject: The Unique Educational Philosophy and Evaluation Policy of New College of Florida

Dear Admissions Committee Members:

New College of Florida was founded in 1960 as a private liberal arts honors college. In July 2001, it became the independent Honors College of the Florida State University System. New College has earned consistent national recognition and rankings for its innovative approach to education, due in no small part to its dedicated faculty, staff, and distinctive curriculum.

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, I have completed seven self-designed learning contracts, three independent study contracts, a senior thesis project and an oral baccalaureate examination conducted by members of the faculty and witnessed by my peers. My New College education has particularly fostered talents in design of research methodologies, independent study, critical thinking, writing, and oral communication.

Approximately 700 students attend New College, representing a collection of the brightest young minds in the nation with an average incoming SAT score of 1321 and average high school GPA of 3.93. The student-to-professor ratio of 13:1 allows for a highly interactive, personalized, supportive learning experience. Novo Collegians graduate from New College and attend graduate schools around the nation, which in recent years have included MIT, Berkeley, Brown, Cornell, Cal Tech, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, William and Mary, Tufts, Michigan, Chicago, Duke, UT Austin, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Georgetown and others.

New College has a long-standing philosophy of independent learning based on subject mastery and critical examination, resulting in a learning environment unique in our modern age. The academic program consists of a rigorous graduate school preparatory curriculum combined with independent study and research. Students do not receive grades or grade point averages; instead they earn narrative evaluations from faculty members. The evaluations are a critique of every components of students’ work—papers, tests, class participation, lab and studio work, independent study projects and internships. Evaluations identify strengths and weaknesses and provide students with informative and useful feedback. The response is a fuller, healthier sense that learning is a life-long process to be cultivated which self-awareness.

I hope this information assists in your assessment of my application. Thank you for your time and consideration of my status as a prospective student in your distinguished graduate program.

someone please respond, I really want to go here but dont know how It will affect my chances

You really have only 2 ways to qualify the impact of New Schools approach.

You can ask New School for a listing of the Med Schools that have accepted "no grade" applicants from their school. Not grad students, not vet techs, not nurses... full US MD and DO matricualted students. Get names and follow up with the applicants as to how the process worked for them.

Unfortunately, your other source of qualifying data does support New School. I would list the web site but it would be stripped from this message. Let's just say that that there is a listing of MD Applicants with a significant database of who applied (and their outcome) from most of the undergrad schools in the country. A quick search shows no candidates from New School in this DB.

I know , but New College isnt probably listed.
