Hey! I'm curious as to what colleges demand some final display of academia from gradating students.
Bates is one... any others?

Kalamazoo College--

--Comprehensive Examination in the Major:
Students must take and pass the comprehensive examination in each declared major field to graduate with a major in that field.
--Senior Individualized Project (SIP): http://www.kzoo.edu/exed/sip.htm

Princeton requires a Junior Paper and then a major senior thesis...they actually have a list of all of the ones archived online somewhere...I guess its a really big deal because my math teacher had his on display in his office and it looked like he had self published it even.
I'm not sure what other colleges require something of this sort, but many departments at colleges will require an honors thesis.

Reed has a pretty high-profile program. All students must take qualifying exams to progress from junior to senior, and then complete a year-long thesis or creative project.

The person who led my Haverford info session mentioned that they have mandatory senior projects as well.

US News has a list of schools with senior capstones - see here.

hadn't thought to look at usnews
thank you for the help, everyone

Add Allegheny and Carleton.

Reed's qualifying exam/thesis combo is crazy.

Bard College. has a senior project.

If the school doesn't require it, a major often will. Por ejemplo, at Penn the international relations program requires you to write a gigantic thesis to graduate.

Also, various honors programs, etc. at schools often have similiar requirements.

Kenyon and Washington College are two schools my daughter is looking at that require a capstone project.

College of Wooster

Each Wooster senior creates an original research project, written work, performance or exhibit of artwork, supported one-on-one by a faculty mentor. This Independent Study, or I.S., is the cornerstone of a Wooster education.

I am pretty sure we do at Tufts, at least they STRONGLY encourage it if you want honors, etc.
