Colleges with Equestrian Teams

My dtr is currently a junior. She thinks she would like a school with a division team, although is not ruling out schools
with Club teams. She has no idea what she wants to major in so we have no idea where to start! I dont want her to base her choice of college solely on the schools' team. Any suggestions?

not sure if this is the type of college you are looking for, but Stanford has a good team. See http://www.ridingmagazine.com/riding_onlinemag/articles/2013_04/stanford.htm</a>

Geographic preferences? Academic statistics? Financial limitations?

Mt. Holyoke has an equestrian team; Hollins Univesity in Virginia also (both are women’s colleges). Here is a link to an article about colleges with equestrian programs: <a href=“Best Equestrian Colleges and Universities”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/collegerankings/tp/top-equestrian-colleges.htm</a> , and reader commentary on same: <a href=“Best Equestrian Colleges and Universities”>http://collegeapps.about.com/u/ua/collegerankings/equestrian-colleges-reader-recommendations.htm</a>

Additionally, here is a link to a website offering help in obtaining equestrian scholarships: http://www.collegeequestrianscholarships.com/index.html#.VCsBYhbGs74</a></p>

With Google these days, info just isn’t hard to find:

NCEA is evidently the varsity level. Schools there likely treat it more like a varsity sport, not a club sport.

My D currently competes on her school equestrian club team. In choosing a school, she did research equestrian teams - both NCAA and club.

There are two types of NCAA equestrian: western and eastern. Also, while (I believe) equestrian has been designated as am “emerging sport” by the NCAA, progress in enticing schools to upgrade their club programs to the NCAA level has been very slow.

Stanford probably has the best club team in the country. I believe Stanford decided not to go NCAA because it wanted the team to be coed.

In Ds case, there were so few school in the country which had NCAA teams and which matched her academic desires, she decided to go the club route. That having been said, the club competes against NCAA teams (usually getting trounced). Her club team attends two day shows away from school; at the conference championships except for team size, club teams were not distinguished from NCAA teams. While she doesn’t ride nearly as much now as in HS, she fills in the extra time with other clubs (she is on the rock climbing club team) and, of course, studying (engineering).

You’re at the beginning of solving the puzzle that is choosing a college. Slow steady research will allow you to digest the mountains of information you will uncover.

According to this site, there are @65 colleges (scattered among Div I, II, III and other) that have varsity level equestrian teams.
