Please forgive me if this been discussed before, but which schools (other than HYP and and the top LACs) are known to be generous with need-based grants to lower and middle income students? Is there a correlation between endowment per student and generosity? Also, are there any top schools which are "infamous" for poor need-based aid?

USC gave me more than full tuition in a single need-based grant, and with federal grants too the total for free money was about $42K

Schools with larger endowments will typically have larger financial aid budgets and can therefore offer need based packages consisting mostly of grants as opposed to loans.

Rice is pretty good. :)

Texas A&M--whooop

From my personal experience, I found Villanova to be very generous (which thanks to the fin aid package i got from them, i'm attending nova next year) Lots of grants ($19,000), subsidized loans, work study. Plus, I would consider myself middle class (combined income of approx $90,000). I know a couple other people in similar situations who got similar aid packages, so i would say its pretty universial at Nova...

I also hear Lafayette is excellent about giving money.
