Colleges with "tufts syndrome"

^ Why would that happen? Just work hard wherever you go, and you'll be fine. Don't look for reverence. Just do what you enjoy.

kevster , are you serious?

Harvard- def. doesn 't have Tuft syndrome.

Swarthmore does not have Tufts Syndrome.
In my opinion, they only accept students who are genuinely interested in attending, and are able to articulate just "why Swarthmore?"

Two people from my high school were waitlisted by Swat:
One with a GPA of 3.9 and an SAT I 2400, SAT IIs of 800s, a dozen 5s on his APs, etc., the other with a GPA of 3.8, an SAT of 2250, etc.

They both expressed a "whatever" attitude toward Swat, saw it as an excellent safety, and I think Swat was able to see through them immediately.

George washington and brandeis for sure...have nearly perfect test scores, perfect gpa, val, tons of ecs, med research for whole yr, lots of aps and was rejected at both...but in my case there may have been another "questionable" circumstance...but still my gc said to expect m$ from them hmmmmm

UF

lots of instate kids with stellar apps get rejected there now, its believed in part to be due to fiances and out of state tuition vs instate…
many many get into much higher schools though were rejected at UF

BUMP. this is important.

btw what about InterIvy Syndrome (lower ivies reject kids that they think will get into higher ivies. i.e. i know someone 2 years ago who got rejected by Cornell, but got into HYS).

Ive seen that happen too- last year students from my school went to Yale, GWU, American, and Cornell because they were rejected from RPI.

You can also add Union College to the list. I know people going to Cornell and NYU because they were rejected from Unions pre-med program.

^^^

I suspect that the rejections from Rensselaer have more to do with the fact that applications have risen from 5,500 in 2005 to > 12,000 in 2009. The 25% - 75% SAT
percentile for the class of 2013 is 1270 - 1450 so your getting more overlap with places
like Cornell which I believe usually runs 1300 - 1500. So it’s not a stretch of the imagination
that some people will be rejected by RPI but get into Cornell, etc.

Let’s not insult some really good schools by simply saying they have some supposed “syndrome”.

^Actually, Wikipedia has an article on Tufts syndrome. Search it :)

WashU is one of the most infamous for tuftation >:O

UCI most definitely! my friend got into MIT, west point, etc. and got rejected from uci. hahah.

Cornell - consistently rejects/waitlists the very top students and accepts mediocre ones from my local high school.

bringing this back…
swarthmore, definitely. it’s so blatantly obvious

Brandeis University - most definitely

more blatant than Swarthmore. im sure swarthmore accepts all the best students and isnt afraid of losing tippy top

Wustl. I didn’t even apply there, so I’m not biased.

Look I have a friend at school who applied to Swat as did I and based on past acceptances from our school and whatnot, both of us had a very good shot at getting in. She has a slightly higher gpa but I have slightly better test scores.
Decisions since have come out. I got an early write mid-March saying they’d love to have me and she was rejected.
I’m fairly certain this was all demonstrated interest. My ‘Why Swat?’ essay was quite strong, I sent them a few updates, contacted them, etc.
If you were waitlisted from Swat, I’m pretty sure a letter would help.

Lehigh also takes top kids as long as there’s demonstrated interest. Our valedictorian last year was flat-out rejected but this year’s got in. This year’s valedictorian is more ridiculously overqualified than last year’s so if anyone should’ve been rejected for tuft’s syndrome it should have been her.

I can’t say for certain as I’m sure I don’t know every case, but if you’re overqualified, I think demonstrated interest helps!!!

Tulane seems to have a case of the tufts syndrome.

rupee2 - let me ask you something, Did you show any interest in Tulane beyond sending in an application? You certainly said you considered it a safety school. So if Tulane waitlisted you, it means they are very astute and had you pegged exactly right. If in fact you were really dying to go to Tulane (and obviously you are not, congrats on the scholarship at Vandy, quite an achievement), they are giving you a chance to tell them that. After all, they didn’t reject you.

This whole Tufts syndrome thing is stupid anyway. If one does the math, the amount a school can change their ranking by manipulating this stuff is very small. In most cases about 1.5-2% of the total criteria used by USNWR. So let’s drop the poorly thought out accusations, not just towards Tulane but any school. Most of these admissions committees have much better things to do than try and game the system this way.

fallenchemist,

Based on some of the results I have seen, there does seem to be validity to these claims with respect to a few schools.

Friends son got in to Vandy and Wake Forest and rejected from UF…
go figure…
