Colleges you were surprised to get into.

Personally, I've only had one of these moments so far, and that was with Boston College.

I remember, how on that late December evening, as I was hammering out the last details of my essays and my CommonApp, I decided to add BC at the last moment.

I had no real interest in BC. I went on a campus tour during the summer and wasn't terribly impressed with it. But, seeing how close it was to home, I thought, "What the hell. Probably won't get in anyways. But I'll give it a good potshot."

I applied to one of BC's most competitive undergraduate divisions - the famed Carroll School of Management, putting down a concentration in finance on its CommonApp supplement. I knew that my chances of getting in were very slim, seeing that BC's overall acceptance rate was 27%.

A few days later, after adding Tufts and UMass Boston, I sent out my CommonApp, happy that the process was over.

In late March, I received a large white packet from BC. I was surprised. "Certainly," I thought, "They don't send rejection or waitlist letters in such oversized envelopes?"

I ripped it open. A booklet slid out, bearing the words "Boston College Welcomes You" in oversized print, along with two pieces of paper held in the inside cover of the booklet.

I sat down at my desk, wide-eyed. I scanned the first piece of paper. It was an acceptance letter.

It must be a mistake.

But it wasn't.

I wasn’t necessarily shocked to get into bryn mawr, mt. holyoke, and smith, but I was surprised about the FA they provided me. Mt. Holyoke gave me their leadership scholarship and BMC and Smith gave me huge grants.

I had applied to both the USAFA and USNA. I received 2 congressional nominations to both.

On Wednesday, the 25th of March, I received a rejection letter from the USAFA. I got really down on myself, because both of those academies use a similar selection method. I really started looking into my plan B options of Oregon State and Arizona.

Two days later on Friday the 27th, I made my routine walk out to get the mail. My neighborhood has the mail boxes grouped together in one large box with separate “doors” with keyholes to get your mail. There is also another large “Box” for large packages, and they put the key to that “box” in your little “box” if the package is for you.

As I approached the mailboxes, I realized the key to the large box was missing. I thought “someone’s getting a package” and moved on to our small mailbox. I opened it an there was the key, and my heart-rate started to climb. I opened the large box and saw a huge thick envelope from the USNA, and I thought “no way, no way”. I sprinted back to my house, opened it up, and there was the navy-blue leather folder with my offer of appointment, certificate of appointment, and a beautiful picture of a sailboat outside of Annapolis at dawn. I was so happy I almost cried, my parents almost cried, and my grandparents did cry. This was remarkable for me, and I still can’t believe I got in.
