Did your doctor say your colon was very dark or had dark spots? If so, almost every GI doc would assume you take laxatives, because that’s almost always the cause, particularly laxatives that are senna or rhubarb derivatives.
I think there are also some supplements that cause that condition as well (can’t remember off the top of my head). It’s a benign condition, but it makes it difficult to see flat polyps.
If you did not have a discolored colon wall (“melanosis coli”), I wonder why your docs assumed you took laxatives.
Medical history and certain medications can impact the doctor’s choice of prep. I don’t know if this particular prep is even in use anymore, but there was a prep entirely in pill form, but I couldn’t take it because I was on blood pressure medication.
For some people, no it doesn’t matter which prep, but I would always run this by your doc before changing preps. Most doctors are fine with you to change as long as there are no contraindications, so they most likely wouldn’t push back on you. At least, that’s the experience I had working at a colonoscopy center.
I agree about Suprep. Tastes like lemon flavored sweat with a dash of cough syrup. I could barely get it down-it’s a good thing it’s not a high volume.
Yes, @Nrdsb4, my dr said there was melanosis, but when I denied I’d used laxatives, he didn’t offer any other explanation for its cause. I think he just assumed I was lying.
Don’t worry, @Nrdsb4. The dr had the list of meds and supplements I took at the time. He never mentioned anything about them. It’s been 3 years since the colonoscopy, and I’m good for another 7 years.
To all. Look at the very first prep with Mirlax and Gatorade. This is very easy to do (except the amount of liquid to drink) and does a good job of cleaning. The other preps are the common one’s your all talking about also.
“Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the regal Black Panther in the Marvel cinematic universe, died Friday of colon cancer, his representative said. He was 43.”
Husband has a colonoscopy on Monday. A gallon jug of stuff he has to drink, 1/2 at 6pm and the other 5 hours before the procedure.
So like a good wife, I went and bought clear ensure, protein water, jello, Gatorade and beef broth. The protein water is white, Gatorade lemon lime, nothing red, blue or purple.
He thinks that the stuff isn’t correct because he can’t see through the white protein water. He has to see through it, according to him.
I informed him that there is no, never has been a clear Gatorade, that you can’t see through coffee or beef broth. And that next time, he can go to the store himself. He’s says that’s ok, he’ll drink the stuff I bought. That it will be ok if he has to do this again.
Someone is looking for people who intend to do a colonoscopy in the next few months for a clinical trial. Looks like they are trying to see if a proposed colorectal cancer screening method using a blood draw is effective by correlating it to colonscopy results. https://www.science37.com/participants/oncology/colorectalcancerstudy/
Dh had his colonoscopy yesterday. Ate normally 2 days before, had coffee the following morning and then nothing until suprep at 6 pm that night. Second dose at 8:30 the next morning and his appointment was at 1:30. I was only able to drop him off and they brought him back to me in the garage 2 hours later. Dh only complained twice about how awful the prep tasted but that was it. He’s a much better patient than I.
Fortunately no polyps but, bc his mother had colon cancer in her 80s he was only given a 5 year pass. We’re both happy to be done for the next 5-7 years.
I just did a stool based test. I was able to collect the sample at home and mail it in to get it tested. My doctor told me to take this test when I said I didn’t want to do a colonoscopy right now. It came back negative. I would have to do it again next year if I don’t do a colonoscopy.
The currently-existing stool DNA test (Cologuard) is specified as an option to do every three years, but is no more effective at preventing colorectal cancer deaths than yearly FIT (detection of blood in stool sample) while being much more expensive.
I am going for colonoscopy #3 Monday morning (I am on the 5 year schedule). I tracked down the doc who did my other 2 - he has his own clinic now, and the prep has changed. Instead of a prescription they had me buy 2 bottles of MiraLAX and some Dulcolax tablets. I eat no solid food the day before, only liquids. At noon I take 2 tablets, then at 4pm I start drinking 64 oz of liquid with the big bottle of MiraLax, then at 8 pm I start drinking 24 oz of liquid with a smaller serving of MiraLAX, and that’s it. YUMMY, right? I feel so much better going back to the same guy. Wife will have to drive me there, wait, and drive me home.
Come to think about it, wife last time did Colonoscopy also requested an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, because she had some kind of stomach problems. Is it normally requested?
I think I should request one(esophagogastroduodenoscopy) next time in about two years because I have a swallow problem, or start to having one. It is a chronically family problem, including my grandfather, aunt and others.
