Colorado School of Mines v. New Mexico Tech

Which one would you choose?

CSM as long as it wasn’t a lot more expensive.

As my husband and I are alums of CSM, I have to say that the two don’t even compare. 25 years later, a degree from CSM still gets recognition. Colorado School of Mines is a great school!

CSM. Golden is a lovely town, with plenty of decent restaurants and rec opportunities, skiing nearby and easy access to both Denver proper and the Denver airport.

The problem with CSM is it’s more expensive than Tech and is stingy with scholarships.

Education-wise. Both schools will give a strong engineering education. CSM has better name recognition.

Thanks, everyone. I really do appreciate it.

Okay, costs aside, compare the two in
-Internship opportunities
-Workload (how is the workload at CSM? I know it’s “big,” but how big is big?)
-Teacher:Student Ratio
-GPAs

Job placement rates are about the same. Golden is a better town than Socorro. Mines has a better reputation than NMT. However NMT is much, much cheaper than CSM.

How badly do you need it to be “much, much cheaper”? In your individual case, NMT may be the better choice.

^ I KNOW NMT is cheaper… but I still want to know how the schools compare in other ways

You can get answers to your questions about teacher:student ratio, internship opportunities, average GPA at graduation, and job placement by contacting the departments that you are interested in. For gossip about individual professors, try ratemyprofessor.com

Workload is harder to evaluate because it essentially requires that someone has attended the same classes at both institutions.

I know kids at both Tech and CSM. I also know faculty at both places. Workload at both schools is challenging, but not overwhelming. Kids at both places have time for hobbies and rec activities.

And I wouldn’t call CSM “big”–while it’s bigger than Tech (which only has about 2000 students), I think Mines has under 5000 students.

Only thing to know about CSM is that housing is only guaranteed for freshmen. Upperclassmen often need to live off campus.
