Columbia essay: What attracted you to your field of study?

Please give your feeback. Thank you. My experience doesn’t sound exciting, but I try to best to be frank.

I am studying electrical engineering. At first, I chose physics as my major for college because I loved what I learned in my high school AP physics. It was one of the first classes I have taken in my life that gave a lot of meaning to math, whose usefulness beyond basic arithmetics I had always questioned. Near the end of my first college year physics course, I was introduced to basic quantum mechanics; the math just overwhelmed me and the heavy theoretical nature compelled me to realize I wasn’t motivated enough to finish a degree in physics. So I decided to switch to electrical engineering (EE). The first few EE courses were simple but I wasn’t yet sure of my interest in it. In the second semester of my sophomore, I took four EE courses and I was buried in schoolwork. Just like with physics, I was compelled to doubt my interest in EE when things got hard. This time, I decided to stay, because with EE, I saw the possibility of applying my knowledge to real-world applications that people could actually use and benefit from, which is a huge motivator for me as I love to see people enjoy the results of my work.

By the way, I am a transfer applicant.

To be frank: I would and will reject you if you apply to my university. Also if you plan to use this essay take it off of cc because this essay will be found to be plagiarized if not taken off.

That’s your essay? As @Overestimated has said, take this off of CC. If I was a admissions officer, I would reject immediately. The tone of the essay is blunt, frank as you said, and demonstrates no legitimate interest.

Always consider the source with any comments on this site. Many would recommend that you question posts from brand new members and others with no track record. And @Overestimated would be one of the few people posting here that I have seen cop to being involved in admissions – assuming s/he is. You have no way of knowing. Nor do I for that matter. Make your own judgments. Oh …, the advice about trying to have the post removed is good, but that is not always possible.

just a suggestion, take what you will with a grain of salt

I don’t think you can remove your posts- I’ve tried several times before, because someone I knew in real life figured out who I was by my admitted student stats (yikes!). Anyways, I don’t suppose it matters too much, because you’ll have to go through a couple rewrites to form that essay a little better.

The tone of the essay is disinterested, which is a bit off-putting. I do see where you’re going with the essay- you want to pursue EE because you value its real world application. However, the description of how you left Physics for EE sounds very blunt, and not in a positive way. I would argue that Physics has just as much real world application as EE- it is literally the science that explains the mechanics of matter and motion our world. I think you should highlight how you didn’t give up when it came to tough EE courses, and focus in on what about EE made you really want to pursue it, and be specific. Perhaps you could talk about an experience you had in class, or working on a project. Although the content of your essay is decent, the presentation is lacking. You don’t have to be flowery with your use of language, but you should try to be eloquent.

@AboutTheSame apologies if I sounded as if I was an admissions officer, the university is in my head, I made it up. I am not an admissions officer at all but if I was I stand by what I said.

@skieurope my bad. I probably read those terms wrong or misinterpreted some old post about deleting posts

No worries @MrElonMusk
