Hi, I was wondering if anyone has or is planning to do this joint program
I want to know how difficult it is :P
ALso, can anyone give me an indepth anaylsis of Columbia?
how to get a chance in going in, etc.

This programme is absolutely brutal. Without a shred of doubt, Columbia-Juilliard exchange is by far the most selective programme you can do as an undergraduate.

A good way to go about it is to apply to Columbia, get in and then practice like mad through freshman year and then apply to the exchange near the end of your freshman year.

Columbia attracts musicians. And this programme takes a single digit number of students every year. It is harder to get into Juilliard from Columbia than it is to get into Juilliard as an undergraduate.

I am a musician myself, and if Columbia was on the CommonApp when I applied, this would have been my first choice. But alas, I could not apply to Columbia at all. Instead I am taking a year off to get better at music.

Consider this only if you are extremely committed to music, and are good enough to make it to the finals of prestigious international competitions.

Programmes like Harvard-NEC will be a bit easier than this. I am going to go to Brown and seek classes at the NEC.

JHU-Peabody should be alright too.

Best of luck!

P.S. - Another thing you might want to consider is - for your instrument, how good the teacher is at Juilliard. I play the classical guitar, so Sharon Isbin at Juilliard is less desirable than Eliot Fisk at the NEC and Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory.

There are many threads/discussion about this program as well as other dual degree music programs on the Music Major forum. I suggest searching that forum. Lots of great ideas for ways to combine the highest level music and academics.

As SpiritManager suggests, we’ve beaten this horse to death here [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums).
