Columbia Masters, is it worth the money?

Got into Masters of Engineering at Columbia after getting denied for Ph.D. There is no allocated scholarship or fellowship at Columbia for masters students. But I did receive Nikola Tesla Engineering Scholar Title. I'm wondering how much will this Nikola Tesla Engineering Scholar title will fetch me.

Are there people around who knows about this?

I do know that there isn't any scholarship tied to the title but, I'm expecting some kind of funds as I was awarded this title. Although it all depends upon how prestigious this title is.

Yikes…

So, 50k for tuition and fees, plus 25k for NYC cost of living.

You could simply ask the department administrative assistant how many enrolled students bear this title.

Good idea.

I’m in the same boat, applied for MS/PhD, only got the MS with the Tesla honor and no money. I have no idea, but it feels like a lot of people got the same title…

I was a civil undergrad and 1st MS in civil too…career changer for me. If you find out more info, please share!

Guess the title is more for CV. I’m applying to Masters there but for math. Columbia has an amazing reputation; but it is expensive. Try talking to the department and financial aid though grad school is mostly loans unless you are fortunate to get money.

I don’t think there is any funding mate. What are you thinking of doing?

Whether or not it’s worth it depends on your file. Did you get denied for a PhD program because it’s just a weird year for you, and you could get into funded PhD programs if you applied next fall? Or did you get denied because your application is not competitive for PhD programs? If it’s the latter case, then maybe attending the MS program is the better choice.

I think it’s my GRE score together with SOP.

GRE : V/Q/W -149/159/3.0 - I could have done a lot better than this. I though of applying for PhD really late so didn’t have enough time preparing for GRE.

SOP: Rather than writing my research interest I wrote down which current project in school I could be working.

GPA: GPA was 3.86 for undergrad. Just two B grades in science related class except all A or A+. So I don’t think this was a factor. But, I didn’t go to any elite university so that might have made that GPA a little less than what it looks like.

What do you think?
