Columbia Official Early Decision Class of 2010 Results

yeah i guess i am sort of thankful....but not surprised

hehe...yeah i know my SAT are low...but they look at them differently if you international....
plus i do the full IB diploma with an extra certificate subject with four higher levels..i.e. one of the toughest cirriculums you can follow...so i think that made up for it

randomly....wats URM?...oh yeah and IMHO or smth like that...i never understand those :(

I really don't understand the adcom....theres this other kid in my grade who applied to Columbia ED....perfect SAT I and II scores....top grades....but apart from that NOTHING...he didn't even fill in the whole EC list...only put 3 down or smth i dunno....but basically....he was just accepted on pure academia....i just don't understand how....I guess another thing might be the fact he's international and from Peru...maybe having him helps the statistics...oh well...neways congrats to u for getting in :)

to all those who got deferred, if you still want to get in, i would say that you have an advantage over the RD applicants. so get in touch with the regional admissions officer, email him/her with your recent achievements, why not even do something to wow them further?

to those who got rejected: well, your stats are great. actually almost everyone's stats here are better than mine - so that comment would apply to everybody. i know the equations aren't all balancing at the moment - but i'm thinking: you know, how sometimes you need to multiply some coefficients, which seems like a rather winding step to do, but you have to do it anyway so that eventually the equation balances out? well, i think that's what's happening when you guys are rejected with stats as amazing as those. in a way, columbia has made it easier for you because they feel that you wouldn't have found your best fit there. there IS another college out there for you - as impossible as that may sound right now. and one day, you WILL be joking about how upset you got over this. and you WILL learn something out of this - as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

to the ones accepted: ignore some of the things others have been saying about your race / accusing you wrongly about going to private counselors. at the end of the day, no other external factor has helped you get in - and the people who matter, who are wise and mature know that. you got in due to your own merits - it doesn't mean that anyone's better than anyone else - it means that the admissions officers thought you would make a great fit and they were right since all of you are ecstatic about getting in. congratulations and i would be so, so happy to be in your shoes a week from now (i applied ED to an LAC and get notified in a week, i think).

best of luck to all of you :D

kee

well said kee.

and the mention of CC=

As the decisions came out over a two-hour period last night, dozens of potential Columbians, ranging from New York City to Bangkok, Thailand, gathered on Web sites like College Confidential, either rejoicing with other admitted students or commiserating with those who were also heartbroken.

divonne,

First of all without any major hooks, your stats are very low.

You present no major hooks; recruited athelte, Legacy, URM -(underrepresented minority) or developmental admit

You are evaluated against the international pool of applicant which there are going to be many for a few slots.

Did you apply for financial aid? Columbia is not need blind to international students. Your ability to pay or if you needed a lot of $ is definitely going to be a factor.

From a parent 09,
From watching the last two year's boards and this year's board, I have to say that from a purely statistical view (SAT/GPA/rank), Columbia's admissions decisions seem to make little sense. They must have a unique view of how they want to build their class. For the high scorers that were deferred/rejected -- maybe a touch of Tuft's Syndrome at Columbia.

sybbie....my stats are very low and Barnard?...i know my stats are low...but do you mean being female doesn't help because of Barnard?

hey but I was actually thinking on applying to Barnard...do you think I might have a higher chance there?

nop...luckily the UN pays for my undergrad so financial aid is no problem...

yeah its a pity I don't really have a hook....well I guess I put alot of emphasis on the fact that I'm doing 7 IB subjects with 4 highers....hardly no one, I can quite confidently say, worldwide does that....

My mom's Peruvian of Slovenian decent and my dad's Dutch....hehe...could that count as a URM...lol....

nah but I'm not losing hope :D....Ill write a letter about my diversity or something....who knows....its worth the try :D

As an RD app, and after seeing all of these "deferred"s and "rejected"s, it seems like columbia doesnt place so much weight on numbers (aka SAT scores) like i thought...

divonne, even with your low stats, there's something about your application that intrigued Columbia enough not to outright reject you. don't give up hope, but give your everything to your other applications, too. good luck.

thanks ColumbiaMom

Stats are low for both schools. Remember that barnard is going to have considerably less spots.

Probably not.

You have to show who you are out side of the classroom because the school(s) are not at a loss for smart students (you see that from all of the stat posting). The school is looking to form a well rounded class that meets its insitutional mission. I think that you are going to have to craft your essays for barnard to show who you are as a person.

my essay already does that ;)...no mention of academics in it whatsoever...just a unique experience I once had..

Columbia can't have "Tuft's syndrome" for ED applicants. It seems like if stats were their major concern, they would have accepted all the "high scorers" in the ED round to boast their rankings. That doesn't appear to be the case.

Anyways, congratulations and condolences to everyone. <3

b/c Columbia has such a high appeal from students across the country, they all want the best of the best, and they can get all of these high scorers in the RD round, these kids aren't going anywhere. How many schools in this country are better than Columbia, i can't name more than 4-5. Enough said...it is a fantastic school. Congrats to those accepted.

ok thats a very mean statement .. if you are not here to give your congratz to the acceptees, what are you doing on the columbia board?! I mean I understand for people who are rejected/defered to be saying this in this tone but you are neither.

congratz linon10' , and dont mind bball, your stats rock and deserved every bit to be accepted. looking forward to meet you next year.

General Comments: although dissapointed that i didn't get accepted, i must say, a deferral is also a bit perplexing. After rumaging around this site and looking at other accept/defer/reject stats, im beginning to wonder why i wasn't dropped like 3rd period french

as of what im going to do in the intriem, im retaking the ACTs...tomorrow actually. my rank went up a little as well. other than that, i really think that im on the edge here, and clinging on for dear life

good luck to other fellow deferrees and rejectees
congrats to acceptees
