Decision: Accepted

Stats:
SAT: 2080 M630/W680/CR770
SAT IIs: US History - 660, Lit - 730
GPA: 4.3 - unweighted not calculated
Rank: not calculated
Other stats:

Subjective:
Essays: Amazing, apparantly. It was a little unorthodox, but I have a habit of becoming friends with english teachers. All of them sat down with me over my essay. All of them loved it.
Teacher Recs: Pretty solid.
Counselor Rec: Glowing. I have a really good relationship with my counselor.
Hook (if any): I don't know. African 1st generation immigrant. I go to one of the most well renowned public high schools in the country (we had to apply to get in). President of the Obscure and Independent Film Club. President of this other really unorthodox club that I don't feel like explaining (let's just say it involves my apparantly eclectic taste in underground dance music, and a room filled with sweaty, sexually repressed seventeen-year-olds). Lot's of creative writing. Acting. Gay-Straight Alliance stuff. Future english major attending The North Carolina School of Science and Math. I pretty much just tried to play the "he's not your average black guy" angle.

Location/Person:
State or Country: North Carolina
School Type: Extremely selective and well known public boarding school
Ethnicity: African American (Liberian, more specifically)
Gender: Male

Other Factors:I (serendipitously) got the oppurtunity to have a private sit-down chat with our regional admissions officer, Rod. I dunno. My SAT scores may be pretty average-low, and my gpa may not be amazing, but I know how to make people like me. We ended up having an amazing conversation during which he actually told me what I should tell my counselor to write on my recommendation. Also, had a remarkable interview. It lasted for well over two hours, and at the end she assured me that she would write a glowing review for me.

General Comments: After seeing all of the amazing stats on this board, I find myself wondering if Columbia has just affirmed my action like whoa. I, however, give not a crap. I am ecstatic to be a prefrosh for the school of my dreams. Life is good.

hmm. yes.

eat me.

edit: and suddenly i regret posting this. i'm not daft. i know that my SAT's weren't great. i certainly know that race was a factor in my acceptance. i love, though, that kids here can ignore everything else that i said about myself and focus on five 3 digit numbers.

for the record, i'm not going to deign to respond to any other negative comments about my stats. i hope that the majority of cc/seas kids aren't as stupid or, well, openly racist as you are.

um. congratulations?

talk about subpar sat scores

guys stop picking on him. My SAT's worse and I'm asian.

JFK: Congratulations! You had a ton of things going for you that you did yourself. Your creativity, for example, leaps off the page (I mean the post), from the clubs you created to the essay you wrote to the creative writing you do to the creative way you made yourself stand out in the application process. Last time I looked, creativity was not something measured by the SAT, but it sure is something valued by the world.

JFK...no need to feel bad, but keep things in perspective. A lot of people just got rejected and seeing someone getting accepted with similar or perhaps lower scores is always hurtful. The fact that you are african-american is simply the excuse or the "difference" that people tack on to explain your acceptance...your essays/recommandations might have gotten you in...you never know, but what is important is that you got in..

Your race was a factor, no question. However, that's not to say that it was the only factor, and it's not to say that you didn't deserve it.

Best of luck to you and and all the other Columbia ED applicants...times like these I'm glad I'm applying RD where if I get rejected from one university, I might get into another a few days later.

Agree with sac

You got to keep in mind that it is about building a well rounded class, the process is never truly stat driven, but more about who are you past the numbers (as you see from the list of accpetances, deferrals and denies) and how you will fit in to the class they are trying to form.

To those who have been accepted, congratulation. To those who have been deferred, ya still have a chance. Those who have been denied, you are still going to end up in an amazing place so keep your head up

dont pick on the guy cuz he's black u well only one word fits in here republican, i saw seas applicants with 2000 and asian who got in i dont want to put that person on the spot but you can look up his/her scores on a previous thread

o come on.. 4.3 GPA.... thats.. nothing to be picked on. he's done great to deserve this acceptance.

Yah, you really deserve the acceptance:)
I feel happy for u:)

columbia2006, I understand that you are upset about your ED outcome, but jumping to conclusions about others decisions won't help you feel any better. just so happen this year SEAS has a less SAT/GPA dependent admisson(not to mention SEAS always have had a very high admission rate for ED)

put away the bitterness toward those accepted with lower marks and do the best with your deferal. be glad you still have another chance to prove yourself and was not rejcted.

I know i'm speaking from an aceptee point of view but try and understand that these decisions were not made by picking names out of a hat and it really does hurt to be asked "did you get extra help?" after all the hard work we put into the application.

dude, stop picking on you shot JFK ok

just cause he get in and you didn't, it really makes no sense for you to be so bitter towards him. congrats on getting in you shot JFK ok :)

Schools take evertyhing into account, if you came out of a richass, elitist white family, maybe you needed more than 2400 to get in cause you took 15000 sat prep classes, hired 30 tutors, lived in a house with 2 maids and had all the resources in the world...

you shot JFK ok you're great. don't regret posting. you deserved to get in. they don't make mistakes.

hello...
well i got defered...but didnt post my stats up yesterday...here they are

guys stop picking on him. My SAT's worse and I'm asian.

any advice on how I can increase my chance as a RDer?

(you might wana edit out the first line from pasting my post. hehe)

its hard to judge or give advice based on the information provided here. the SATs are bit low.. but so are many other ED aceptees'...

Congratulations YoushotJFK!

No need for you to "regret" posting the stats. As you know, a lot of folks are (understandably) disappointed over the decisions they received. We would have very disappointed too. Unfortunately there are always going to be a couple who feel the need to blame someone else for their loss. Columbia is about a lot more than just numbers, and clearly, so are you! You've got that vitality -- that "edginess" -- that will no doubt make classes far more interesting. Columbia's "vibrant" student body is one of its main attractions as far as I'm concerned. Hope to meet you along the way. Meantime, ignore the detractors and celebrate your success -- you deserve it.

P.S.: Your stats are NOT subpar. Columbia College is humanities oriented -- your CR and your Literature SAT II are very strong and impressive, and the other scores aren't god-awful. Moreover, the GPA is great as well. We'll have a great time in Lit Hum and Contemp. Civs together! Don't let anyone deal you that "sub-par" numbers "and he's black" crap.

JFK

I am sure that you are an extraordinary individual and the SATs scores are just a test of your matha nd english skills. I dont think Columbia took you because you are African American. In fact, i think being African American played a very small part in your acceptance. I am sure that there was something about your app that made the adcom go 'wow.'

take care..and enjoy your senior year

JFK: I also think that your SAT scores, are not amazing, but very, very good, similar to mine overall. You had the right stuff, your race may have had a role in your admission, but not a big role...Congrats

divonne, I think you should be thankful, your scores are quite low, no offense, there have been people deferred with 1400s SATs, my friend 1370, (630W)=2000 SAT was rejected so be thankful and he was a URM, and had a decent amount of hooks...so, truth be told, I am very surprised you were deferred with those stats...
