Decision: Rejected

Stats:
SAT: 760 M/770W/720CR
SAT IIs: 800 Spanish/ 770 French/ 770 US Hisotry
GPA: 4.12
Rank: 17 out of 350
Other stats: 5s on US History/ American Gov't/ Human Geo
Subjective:
Teacher Recs: Great recs and a supplemental rec from my doctor who is a prof at Columbia
Essays: Great Essay
Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me as well. Hell, who doesn't?
Hook (if any): Fluent in four languages: Arabic, French, Spanish, English
Location/Person: Wayne NJ
State or Country: NJ
School Type: Public High School
Ethnicity: Colombian/Lebanese
Gender: Male
General Comments: Really, really crushed...I don't get it.

thats odd ColumbiaRock...unless you're lying about your stats I would think you would AT LEAST get deferred if not accepted...hmm. There must've been something iffy about your app.

Columbiarocks88:

Something of this happend.

Somebody wrote a non-strong rec letter

You didn't take a heavy academic load (relative to your school) .

Adcoms didn't like your essay(s).

Your interview went wrong.

Good luck during the RD round!

visitor...for him to get rejected based on interview/essay they had to have been HORRIFIC - I mean outright offensive...because my friend got deferred and his essay wasn't good at all...extremely low SAT scores, but a 4.0. Rec letters play a minor role...that too would have to have said "This student is horrible and should not be accepted" for it to mean much...my english teacher who is friends w/ Georgetown Adcom and a Harvard Adcom said that they told him that they usually have closed envelopes of rec letters sitting on their tables after they've already made their decisions...the only time they actually open it is when it comes down to the point and its a borderline decision...his stats were definitely not borderline. The workload could play a factor, but still not enough to get him outright rejected...at least deferred...and he won't be seeing the RD round..so GL with his other colleges.

I'm having a little trouble with the outright rejection, too. What about your EC's?

Or you could just be lying...like a lot of people on CC from what I believe. If you aren't lying...I'd look over your APP b4 u apply to any other schools to see what messed you up...

"Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me as well. Hell, who doesn't?"

Could this attitude have been reflected somewhere (in the app? teacher letters? GC letters?) and could it have affected the decision?

yah seems a tad bit cocky...if that was evident in your essay or said by a teacher...that could've been the deciding factor

*Decision: DEFERRED *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2330 - 800 Math, 770 Writing, 760 Critical Reading
[] SAT IIs: 800 Chemistry, 780 Writing, 790 Math IIC, 740 Biology E
[] GPA: 4.19 weighted
[] Rank: School does not rank.
[] Other stats: PSAT semi-finalist, 5's on AP USH, Chem, Calc BC, and English Language.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: May have been too controversial, talked about race and affirmative action, and my personal experiences and opinions concerning them, from an Asian viewpoint.
[] Teacher Recs: Good to excellent, respectively, one is from my AP Gov teacher and another is my AP Language.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea, but my counselor likes me.
[] Hook (if any):

[] School Type: Competitive Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian-American
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Varisty Cross Country, President of the Asian Cultural Studies Club, Delegation Leader for Model UN, various MUN awards and Cross Country medals.
General Comments: Dissapointed. Being an over-represented minority didn't help. Writing an essay about that might not have helped either.

My college counselor told me a similar case. A high GPA student, top SAT I/II scores, exceptional essays and EC, President of his class, and Captain of the polo team. During the interview showed his extreme arrogance. He was plain rejected.

yah visitor thats what I mean...unless he was offensive or cocky interviews play a minor part...it would have to be disasterous to play a huge effect

DECISION: ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!

Stats-

SAT: Math: 690 Verbal: 710 Writing: 660

Other stats:

I don't feel like listing my other stats, but as you can see, there are a lot of people who got rejected and deferred with MUCH better academic stats than me. I have regained faith in the system, because I now know that they DO look for other things. I am an accomplished pianist, athlete, and singer and have shown a devotion to the things I love to do, especially service to the community. When they say that's what they are looking for, they mean it. I LOVE COLUMBIA and CANT WAIT TO GO THERE NEXT YEAR. WOOO!!!! P.S. I cried hysterically when I got in

I feel like i had a really good essay.. it was about the "race" bubbles on the SAT. I didn't read my recs....eh... basically i'm really pumped. I can't wait for next year!!

Being deferred can't help my opinion, but I really believe it's more and more of a crapshoot now, this whole application brouhaha. I haven't lost hope, but as past experience taught me, nothing is guaranteed. Better grades, standardized tests, more ecs, don't really mean anything... there's so much room for uncertainty.

chewondave: You are obviously a great candidate. Yes, it's a crapshoot past a certain point. But, reading your description of your essay, I believe it probably hurt you and that you might think about a different topic for the rest of your applications. You are entitled to your opinon, of course, and some day might write a paper or a newspaper editorial on what you perceive as bias in admissions. But every writer learns you need to know your audience. Remember that the people reading your essay believe in what they are doing, and probably will not appreciate the implication that you think their decision is biased if they reject you. An admissions committee accepts students they might like to meet, people they'd like to see on campus for four years. Funny people, compassionate people, persistent people, creative people, people with unusual stories to tell, intellectually engaged people....If your essay comes across as a complaint, especially about the way they go about their business -- does that make you someone they can't wait to meet?

The other element, of course, is athletics. If the coach in your particular sports wants you, that's great. If he wants someone else, even with lower stats, then it doesn't help you. So, if you want to strengthen your application to Columbia for the RD round, I'd suggest you think about some aspect of yourself that you did not display, or did not do justice to, in the ED round and include it in a letter.

Think of the first round as a way to get information about how to present yourself. You will have choices in the next round, I'm sure.
