Academic Index Calculator - Ivy League

ppl plz post ur academic index 1-9 and whether u got in if u only took 2 sat II use sat writing.

That academic index calculator is ridiculous. These things are beyond frustrating.

It gives a score based on SATs and GPA or rank.
So obviously, you have higher numbers, higher score.

It should be intuitive that kids with those high scores will stand a good chance. But schools consider a lot more than numbers - don't we know this by now?

Don't psyche yourself out with that stupid thing if it gives you a low score. Conversely, don't psyche yourself up if you've got a good score. I had a 4 and I've been accepted ED to Columbia. Go figure, eh?

I got a 3, and I was deferred ED.

Also, note that I have a 3.7W(approx. 3.0UW) GPA, so that should show that Columbia looks at more than your numbers!

the number out of 9 doesn't seem to match the number out of 240

..and besides the obvious fact that it doesn't include ECs, essays, recs, etc., most schools are now counting the writing section, and most schools only count 2 SAT IIs.

I read somewhere the Acedemic Index's use of rank hurts those who are ranked and are from smaller class sizes and rewards those who are unranked and from larger classes. Yes it also punishes whose SAT I scores are skewed or if one of them are low. It also does not take into account the things that shools like Columbia value like essays, EC's and intangibles. That's make sense because we all know some schools turn away people with 800s right?

One of my friends got 2400 in SAT1 and 800 math2 800 physics 800 chem
got acceptted by CU as ED applicant.I'm thinking about if CU pays a lotta attention on grade, tests thing.

Wow. So as long as you're above 4.3, they don't care how high above it you are? That is spectacular, if true.

I got an 8 btw, and I don't consider myself one of these nutjobs without a life.

I got a 5 and got in ED...

If a school doesn't consider SAT scores to be "everything", it doesn't mean that you will be penalised if you have stellar scores. But yes, be it Columbia or any other school, your GPA is undoubtedly the most important thing on your application. ECs, essays and the like are definitely helpful, but only after you demonstrate that you can survive the Core. And the only way to do that is through your GPA.

^And your SAT II's and AP tests. Because there is so much grade inflation, it's possible to get an 89.6% average at an easy school and have it be a 4.0. Therefore, the SAT II's and AP's, since they're directly testing your knowledge in specific classes, "validate" or "invalidate" your GPA.

^

Agreed, and this is the same reason SAT I's are also used. There are some really eyebrow-raising stories about the way certain high schools run their GPA system, and corrupt systems are definitely giving kids a boost. But unless SAT I's, II's, and APs correspond to those grades, I think admissions officers will be able to see through the inflation.

OMG, I got a likely! Sooooooooooooooo Happyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

:)

Hey, Blaster, CC or SEAS?

Blaster is probably BSing, look at his post in the Likely letter thread.

kwu: I applied to CC

gouchicago: Why is it so impossible for a deferred applicant to get a likely letter? After all, it has already been speculated that all the top schools this year didn't take too many ED/EA applicants because they wanted to see the caliber of the RD applicants first, because I know in the past schools have taken too many ED/EA and ended up regretting it in the RD round.

But that leaves me to believe that Columbia is more or less finished with reading applications, because they only pulled out deferred applications for review after they finish reading all the RD applications.

^ Sorry Blaster, I confused you with the guy who posted a weird letter that he got from Columbia. I hope you aren't hurt :).

gouchicago, that guy was a transfer.
Given that ol' Hah-Vahd is cutting it's transfer program this year,
little wonder that Columbia is following suit.

^
^

Of course not. I just wanted to put that bit of information out there for anyone who's interested.

And in reply to kwu, I don't think Columbia would make the same mistake as Harvard and cut the transfer program this year since applications have been sent already. But for the following years, I think there's a good chance that all the Ivies will follow since they are already at their maximum capacities, and since the dropout rate is next to zero, there really isn't a lot of space for transfers.

I am a high school senior with a 1350 on my SAT's, a 3.7/4.0 GPA but with an insane amount of EC activities as well as many leadership positions, i am also African American...what are my chances of getting into an IVY league college

You don't mean 1350/2400 do you?
