Columbia Official Early Decision Class of 2012 Results

Assuming that the date is actually pushed back, there could be multiple reasons for this that have nothing to do with having to process more applications.

Blah, there was a link somewhere on this board to an article. I'll try to find it.

Found it:

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/28/ed...=1&oref=slogin%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/28/ed...=1&oref=slogin</a></p>

The link doesn't work..

I think she was talking about this article: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/28/education/28admissions.html?ref=education%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/28/education/28admissions.html?ref=education</a></p>

Thanks for posting the link.

Yeah, I am not completely sure of numbers but 25 percent jump puts it past Yale. Techincally Yale had a 38 percent increase, but really 18 percent since 2005, as EA apps dropped a lot last year...this is all from that NY Times article...I'm guessing that moderate means at most an increase by 500 apps, but then again I'm not fluent in adcom.

Wait, I take that back...It's been a long day and I'm not thinking straight...and increase by 500 or so WOULD mean a 25% increase...and someone did mention that in the Spec thread...but I doubt those figures are accurate, if NY Times reports on Yale's jump being huge and Brown, Dartmouth, and Columbia as only moderate.

A moderate increase is probably a few percentage points, which is to be expected in a year when there are so many students applying. It is not surprising that EA schools would experience a steeper increase as students become more savvy and look for certainty during an uncertain cycle. However, it would be really surprising to see a huge bump for any ED school because--no matter what the admissions climate--there will always be a limit to the number of students who would want to be bound.

nimby58, that is a good point.
I hope that also means we (ED applicants) stand out more.

someone mentioned something about financial aid packages having to be finished by the end of this week for the decision or something? im not exactly sure what it was.. but i'm pretty sure that financial aid decisions are separate from admissions decisions because columbia is need-blind, so decisions aren't made along with financial aid decisions. there are two different offices that do that.. and we'll get an estimate i think in december (don't quote me im not sure, just what i think) and then we send more stuff in later (if admitted) and they give us the package. so packages and decisions are separate

oh and apparently (for clarification purposes) applications did NOT go up 25%, probably just 4%, including SEAS and the College (this was mentioned in a different thread) ... so this probably won't affect the date when decisions are released by thaaat much.

No, but something else did. Columbia has been so consistent the last two years regarding the notification date. One would expect the decision to be the same if everything else remained relatively the same. I wonder what caused the week long delay to the 15th.

everyone cross fingers for the 6th..?
theres only so much we can do now

hm me too i just read mariachristina's post. i'm so upset. i want to knowwwwwwww already i'm tired of waiting :( i've been waiting since like February when i was absolutely positive i wanted to go to columbia. now these days seem eternal.

Does Columbia do this every year?
Telling the applicants it'll come out on the 15th sharp
and doing a SURPRISEEEEE ?
or is it just us that's stuck with 15th !

whew
i need to relax.

Yeah, this might seem like a dumb question, but will we EVER have a definitive date? Does anybody know if the date is actually announced before decisions are released, or is everybody just supposed to be surprised?

Read my "news" topic

carou: It was me who mentioned the finaid stuff. I think Columbia (despite being need-blind) sends out the finaid and admissions stuff together. I could be wrong, but I think I read that in the RD thread or something... maybe someone who's gone through the Columbia admissions process before could elaborate?

oooh okay. well i didn't know hehe. ANYWAY GUYS. look what i just read:
Columbia University Admissions 2008
FRIDAY THE 13th? WHAT?!?!?!
