"...and its almost unknown on the West Coast. "

You are right on with this and I am having to explain Brown to all our family. They just have never heard of it. They wanted dd to go to Stanford, where she was just not interested.

I still don't get it with Brown. What is the deal? How good is it? Will it be really good for bright kids that don't yet have a major anywhere in sight? But that have in-depth research and publication in an area they would like to continue in but not major in?

Huh... where I am on the east coast, pretty much everyone knows about Brown, and they think very highly of it.

I think a lot of people know about Brown simply because of its place in pop culture. Brown had a thing where they showed a bunch of movie/TV shows that mentioned Brown or had Brown alums as characters, and Brown was in Family Guy, As Good As it Gets, My Best Friend's Wedding, Sex and the City, 30 Days and 30 Nights, Anywhere But Here, Outside Providence, The Sopranos, and some more, and there were a few movies I saw that mentioned Brown that weren't even in the clip montage (like The Perfect Score). I think I probably heard of Brown from pop culture well before I started looking at colleges.

Lisa is failing gym and she's about to get her report card. The president of Harvard is in the classroom in her dream and says something along the lines of: "nasty buisiness, that F. Naturally Harvard's doors are now closed to you, but don't worry. We'll be sure to pass your application along to <<snickers>> Brown."</snickers>

Also, (and I forget the context) it comes up somehow that Otto, the burnout schoolbus driver, is a tenured professor at Brown.

Actually, while there IS that Family Guy reference, there is also a whole episode where the family visits Brown because it is the girl's first choice college. And I remember some episode where she is writing for the school paper and she's like "I have to write a great article or else I won't get into Brown" or something.
