Which would you guys choose and why?

What are you interested in studying?
Do you like core curriculums?
What kind of environment do you like?
Do you want to have a campus that looks normal or a more aesthetically appealing one?

It would be up in the air if we were comparing Columbia C with Georgetown SFS.

If we’re comparing the College with the School of Arts and Sciences, then Columbia wins hands down–NYC, prestige, academics, financial aid.

Its Columbia CAS and Georgetown MSB and im interested in studying Business so i would do Econ at Columbia and then International Business/Finance at Gtown’s Business school. I like the Core and I like NYC and DC alot, they both seem great. Columbia is an Ivy and Gtown is rebuilding its business program so it can look like it will be great in the future thats why the decision is difficult

My sister minored in international business at Gtown and she absolutely loved the program. She got great study abroad opportunities and has been really successful. I would say Georgetown just because it will give you the opportunity to have better/higher level jobs after graduation, and that job experience will look better on your resume for MBA programs, etc. I think going to an actually business school rather than just majoring in econ shows initiative.

I would choose Columbia.
Mainly because I love New York City.
Ivy League status helps too.
You have a great position to be in… you really won’t go wrong.

I would personally choose Georgetown because I’m from DC and I like it… I like dc better then NYC… I’m not really aware of columbias campus but i like that Georgetown Is in dc but secluded…

Although I don’t know really if I would go since it’s like a 3 minutes walk tops away

Columbia hands down. No offense to Georgetown but I just don’t think Georgetown is on par with schools like Columbia, Penn, Dartmouth, and Brown and more on par with Cornell.

lol I really wanna control myself but I can’t help it…

so when did Cornell go behind penn dartmouth and brown again??!!! they are peer schools people wake up @@

Prestige, yes. But, I would submit that, for many kids, Georgetown would be a better collegiate experience. (Contained campus, real D1 sports…)

Cornell has prestige really only because of its Hotel School. At least that’s what the overwhelming majority of people I know believe. Don’t get me wrong, its a great school, but I don’t think its undergraduate education compares to many of its “peers.”

I agree, Georgetown has much more of a college feel. And I believe most business employers would consider a MSB degree more substantial than a Columbia CAS degree? Well, I would.

lol Cornell’s pretty good at science too…
oh heck why am i trying to arguing here? whatever I’m out. peace :P

I’d go to Georgetown. I’ve been to both schools and Columbia didn’t really impress me all that much… I do prefer DC to NYC though so perhaps I’m a little biased.

I literally laughed out loud at this.

And then I sobbed at the ignorance.

Very, very few universities can match the breadth and depth of Cornell. Among the elites, only Michigan, Penn, and Berkeley have as many diverse strengths.

To answer the OP, Columbia has stronger academics, a better reputation, and slightly better business placement. Georgetown has a better collegiate experience. The difference, however, is not significant enough to be a factor. Choose between the urban campus of Columbia and the more traditional campus of Georgetown.

Ha, I’m merely relaying the opinions of many I know. Personally, I have no real substantial view of the school.

But are you talking about Cornell’s grad or undergrad education?

lmao let’s focus on the topic

I’d choose Columbia just because it’s in NYC, I mean, come on, it’s NEW YORK, CONCRETE JUNGLE WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE OF!

A lot of students on this thread seem to choosing Columbia because of two things:

1) NYC
2) Ivy (prestige)

I think while in high school, the biggest misconception is that you go to the most prestigious school you get into. But once you get to the actual college, you realize that, hey, it doesn’t matter that much. While Columbia is more prestigious etcetc, the difference in prestige is definitely not THAT big of a deal. Go to the school that FITS you.

NYC, the number one reason some students gravitate towards Columbia, is not necessarily as amazing as it sounds. In fact, it’s a major reason I didn’t choose it in the end. Now, I’m not saying it’s not an incredible school. Heck, I applied to it for a reason. But remember that because of NYC, Columbia does not have the typical collegiate feel. There isn’t the sense of community or school spirit that many kids would value (this is simply what a lot of students that I spoke to there informed me. It might be because we were comparing “community feel” and “school spirit” relative to Duke, but whatevs haha).

No one can truly decide for you… that’s something you have to feel yourself. The best thing to do is to VISIT both campuses. Seriously.

Anyway, think about the following couple of things:

1) Do you want the core? Are you SURE (just making sure hahah. 'Cause I thought I wanted it but realized last minute “NOPE, not in a million years…”)?
2) Access to research? (Columbia wins this)
3) Community/school spirit?
4) THE PEOPLE. This is really important, which is why visiting is really important.
5) The campus. (Let me tell you something… waking up in a de facto castle every morning and seeing the Duke chapel is a beautiful, beautiful feeling…)

While I personally dislike Gtown right now (WE SHOULD HAVE WON WE SHOULD HAVE WON FDSGH), I just wanted to make sure you didn’t only have advice from HS kids going “OMG NYC IT’S AMAZING! AND AN IVY OMG!”

I was admitted to both Georgetown SFS and Columbia College (major is International Relations). Although I ultimately chose neither, my final decision was between Pomona and Columbia. I think I liked Columbia’s location, financial aid offer, and greater perceived diversity more than Georgetown’s, although it was a tough choice.

I agree on the NYC part. Doesn’t seem that fun for college, I don’t understand why people think its so great. The kids I met at columbia for Days on Campus didn’t seem super happy.

Well since I live near DC, I can tell you that Georgetown is an awesome place for college students. The nightlife and the campus is awesome, and all the college kids get cool internships and jobs that really help them in the future. I would not choose this on prestige because there’s so little different, it’s not like you’re choosing between an Ivy League and some random other school. Also you have to really know if you want to go to school in New York because that’s not for everyone. But yeah, I say Georgetown definitely.
