Columbia's Fraternity or Soronity - What are they like?

Just wondering, how are the columbia frats and soro's... are the girls and guys very "naughty" and "liberal" or are most of them controlled etc... any info would help. thanks.

anyone on this topic?

cu doesn't have much of a greek culture. Frat and soro ppl are ridiculed (according to the friend I know there who claims that he would join a frat if he were at a different school)

Frat and sorority people are not ridiculed. The Greek scene is pretty active, it just isn't the center of attention like at other schools.

what type of ppl usually join columbia frats and soro? just wondering since my gf is going there and is thinking about joining a soro

Like any college, each fraternity/sorority has its own identity. Most are just regular people who want to have some fun on campus with like-minded people. It gets tiring running around the city all the time, so it's nice to be a part of a fraternity or sorority.

Achilleus -- do you belong to a frat? Could you describe some of the different identities?

I do, but I won't say which.

There are three "jock" frats, one for football, one for baseball, and one for basketball, although non-athletes are members. They're generally very centered on sports and almost always only have parties during their own seasons. There is also a swimming frat, but they're not really jocks. They don't really party, either.

There are two (perhaps three) "nerd" frats, where everyone is pretty clean cut, gets good grades, is involved with lots of stuff on campus, and don't really throw parties very often.

There are two "animal house" type frats, perennially on probation and loathed by the administration. They have the most parties, especially at the beginning of the year, and are probably the closest thing to what one would expect of fraternities at other schools.

A couple others exist, but they don't fit into any real category.

Then there are a bunch of "ethnic" frats, but I really don't know anything about them.

Thanks. Which are the nerd frats? ( :) hopes he'll name the one her son just joined)

Can the sororities be categorized that way? (Wondering about the one her law school buddy was in.)

The sororities fall into two categories, as far as I can tell: those with many hot girls and those without many hot girls.

sigh......
way to shatter a mother's last illusions.

The reason the distinction is so "shallow" (and what isn't shallow?) is that it has been my experience that sorority girls have few distinguishing characteristics besides God-given appearance. They all dress the same way, talk the same way, etc. etc. etc.
