Combinations with Civil Enginering

Hi there,
I am a sophomore at Vanderbilt University. Currently a Civil Engineering major, with minors in German (language) and Computer Science.
Recently I have been feeling that Computer Science is not the right combination with Civil Engineering since both has a lot of work and it gets hard to balance.

Is a CS minor useful at all in the field of Civil Engineering, when I’m most interested in Energy resources engineering and transportation engineering? If so, how?
Also, if I rather do a major in German, will that be better for future jobs?

No, if you want to work as a civil engineer, a CS minor, or any other one, is not useful. It would be better to take more design classes in the areas you’re interested in. Employers want to see that you’re ready to start working as a civil engineer, not as a computer programmer or German speaker.

@MaineLonghorn Thank you for your response. So a language won’t do much good with my job application?

I don’t think so. Even if you worked on a project being constructed in Germany, they wouldn’t send over an E.I.T.

Concentrate on developing the skills a civil engineer needs. That’s your best bet. Engineering employers are practical - they want to hire someone who can hit the ground running (as much as a green engineer can!).

@MaineLonghorn Thank you again. That makes total sense.

Good luck to you!
