Hey I'm planning an exchange to the University of Michigan for the Winter Semester 2011.

I'm not sure exactly what this forum is all about but I just wanted to ask a few questions because it's hard to find some students of Umich to get first hand feedback from.

I'm 20. I'm coming in the winter semester, I know this is probably not the most fun time to come but it is all that works for me. So i'll be there from jan-may.

I'm pretty outgoing and love to party. Also I love my sports (so devastated no football when i'm there)

I've seen a few people saying the Michigan winters aren't much fun. So i'm just wondering, am I gunna have a kick ass time? I really want the full american college and partying fun experience.

Any feedback or opinions would be very handy.

if you’re willing to leave your warm environment surrounded by happy kangaroos and cute koala bears… yeah sure welcome to Michigan

just throwing it out there, I heard Koala meat is tender and juicy.

That…was uncalled for.

yeah sure i’ll sneak a couple across, u guys got gum trees over there though?

seriously thought any feedback from anyone?

Your impression of michigan weather might be underestimated. DRESS WARM. Prepare accordingly. I live in michigan and the winter can get really cold. This is especially true for those who come from warmer places and aren’t used to the cold. Of course it doesn’t mean you have to dress like your going to the arctic though. Also, be careful of ice on the sidewalks and streets.

Spring and summer is balmy and really nice and warm. It can get humid in the summer though.

Ann arbor is really one of the best college towns around and you will find american partying all over the place. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of stuff to do with your friends. Your lucky your coming to ann arbor. A lot of colleges around america are really good quality places but some don’t have the best locations. Unlike U of M, which is in the middle of ann arbor.

And don’t go to detroit while your here. Its pretty messed up. If you do go to detroit to visit museums and downtown detroit with friends, make sure your out of the poor neighborhoods and not walking around at night.

at australia you like to share popsicles with a koala on a nice, hot day. here in michigan we like frozen koala popsicles.

moricarak are you a 7th grader pretending to be a high school senior?

vice versa. the wait is driving me crazy.

I agree with all the actual advice posted (as well as the request for a stowaway koala…). You’ll have to adjust to the weather, but with the proper clothing you’ll be okay-- and you’ll be able to find plenty of outerwear shops when you get here. There is lots to do and you’re sure to have a good time despite the weather. Though I am afraid the koala/kangaroo comments may continue. :P

“I’m pretty outgoing and love to party.”

Although Michigan is not really a “party school”, you will definitely find good parties if you look. So you will not be disapointed in this regard.

Also I love my sports (so devastated no football when i’m there)"

Too bad you will miss Michigan football games, but you will be able to enjoy Michigan Hockey (which is almost as awesome as Football) and Michigan Basketball, which is on the rebound and is doingwell these days.

“I’ve seen a few people saying the Michigan winters aren’t much fun.”

Michigan winters aren’t as bad as people make them out to be. Yes, they are cold, but life goes on pretty much like it does the rest of the year.

“So i’m just wondering, am I gunna have a kick ass time? I really want the full american college and partying fun experience.”

Whether you have a “kick ass time” or not depends on you, but if you take the right initative, you cannot get a better college experience than the Michigan experience. So, have fun…and make the most of it.

Thanks heaps for that response alexandre… good to get somethin back that doesn’t involve kangaroos or koalas. I’ve never watched an ice hockey game so that will hopefully be a great experience.
Can’t wait to be over there and drink some beers in a whole different environment. Notice many aussies or pom students in ann arbour?

I knew an Australian girl back in my days, but there weren’t many.

can you buy beers at the hockey and basketball games? is it hard to get tickets to the games normally or does everyone who wants to go end up there. hopefully I can find some good parties when im over there. ive heard good things about ann arbour as a good college town so i’m pretty keen, even if it is winter.
what do most people do for the uni of michigan spring break? its not actually in spring is it? and doesn’t really lineup with the whole florida thing?

From the sound of it, you should probably be at Michigan State or Wisconsin - Madison!

You can’t buy beers at the hockey and basketball games. They don’t sell alcohol at Big Ten events. It shouldn’t be too hard to get tickets to the games but many of them are sold out so you will have to buy them from someone who has them. You will find some good parties when you’re over here. Ann Arbor is a great place even in the winter.

Michigan’s spring break is at the end of February so it is still winter and the break comes before most of the other schools. Florida is a popular destination duing the break. It’s also a good week for a ski trip. If you haven’t been to America before it would be a good time to take a trip to New York, DC or Chicago.

Ohh ok thanks. so is there pre game drinks at places, over here before out college rugby games we normally have a 100 club. or to people just enjoy the atmosphere and skill of the college level games? im sure its a completely different level than i can imagine.

Yeah so a few Michigan people head south to the warmer places? I’d be keen to make a flight down to miami if theres some good partying to be had down there, also to get some warmer weather a bit closer to australias temp. Guess i’d wait and see what friends i meet might be doing for it.

Thanks for the info guys much appreciated hey.

As far as pre-game drinking goes, you’ll get the chance to experience American tailgating parties, and there’s plenty of alcohol to be found there. Good times. But yeah, most people go to somewhere warm for Spring Break. Lots of people go to Florida, others still go to any number of islands in the Gulf Coast. Mexico (especially Cancun) used to be a popular destination, but it’s not as safe for tourists there as it used to be, what with all the drug cartels.

cool so tailgating happens for sports other than just football? maybe a flight down to florida will be in order come springbreak.
