Commencement: Spring 2015

This will be our first commencement at Furman University. Noticed that it is held in the evening starting at 7:30pm follow by a celebration at Fluor Field.

Looking to see what families have done with their own celebration. Did you have a luncheon to celebrate and then attend the ceremony? or did a brunch the next day.

We need to make our travel plans and reservations, looking forward to this milestone.

Thank you.

You are smart to plan ahead. My daughter graduated in 2012 and there were a lot of events leading up to the actual graduation ceremony.

Best I remember, the parties that included parents started on Thursday night with a cocktail party/buffet dinner thrown by a family at a downtown restaurant. Friday night a couple parents organized a big party downtown for a group of about 30-35 graduates and all their families. That party included dinner, band and bus transportation for the students. On Saturday we celebrated with our daughter and her 3 roommates in their apartment. The girls were very close so all 4 extended families got together for a light dinner before the graduation procession. I think the students had to gather near the fountain around 6:30 so we started our little party at 4:30. We got a bunch of party platters from Whole Foods and a big cake from Brick Street Cafe and took lots of pictures of the girls in their caps and gowns. I bet we had 30 people in that apartment but it was a blast and the girls were so excited. The next day we had brunch with just our family.

A word of warning – if the schedule is the same as our year, seniors had to be signed out of their apartments no later than 5:00 the day after graduation. That was a killer in our case. Seems the girls were having so much fun that last week with all their friends that they hadn’t done anything about packing. Everyone was tired and it was a mad rush to get that apartment cleaned out. The keys were turned in with 5 minutes to spare and a lot of decent things were thrown out just because it was easier than trying to find a way to get them home.

Grits80 - Happy New Year and thank you so much for your comments. It helps narrow our plans for the graduation ceremony for our son.

You’ve given me some ideas as what we need to do with our plans. Our son lives off campus and I think that getting the families of the boys he live with to have a nice gathering at the house will be an idea.

Thanks again!
