Common App Essay

I got in a car accident the day before I took my driver’s test and passed. The car had around $5000 worth of damage and insurance company was very close to dropping my family.

Is this a good idea to write about?

What did you learn and how did it change you?

Well that would certainly be memorable and humorous. How does that define you, make you interesting, etc?

It put the world in a bigger context, before i never realized i could impact my family financially and emotionally so much, thus i think more about my actions and am more conscious about their affects on others
I think it defines me because one of my best characteristics is that failure pushes me to succeed (could tie this into school success) and i think that some people would say that they could never do what i did because they would be too scared, but if you create urgency for yourself and a reason to succeed, then you can do almost anything

Sounds like the foundation for an essay…be vivid and interesting (and funny if appropriate). Thousands of kids will
write about how some circumstance or event made them better. Getting into a car wreck ahead of a driving test is memorable and perhaps comical (at least to the outsider).
