Common app essays

Hey i was just wondering which of the five essays you are choosing to do. or which one you think will be most ommon/ which ones to stay away from. thanks in advance!

It doesn’t matter which one is the most common.

Ranking from best to worst (completely my opinion):

 1. Story central to your identity. I interpreted it as a “topic of your choice” kind of prompt, and I’ll be writing on this one.
 2. Transition to adulthood. I don’t like this one much, mostly because a seventeen-year-old hasn’t really transitioned to adulthood yet in the first place, but it’s better than the last three.
 3. Time when you challenged a belief, just because most people haven’t done this. If you actually have a story that could go with this, I think it could be an awesome essay.
 4. Time when you experienced failure, mostly because a lot of people on here think “failure” is defined as “getting a B in a class.” People will be scared to write about their real failures and the essays will be really cliche.
 5. Place where you feel content. A lot of people will just describe the place without showing any conflict or growth.

As halcyonheather said, it doesn’t matter which are the most and least common. What matters is that you choose a topic that you feel that you can write an essay that captures who you are and what you value.
