"Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they feel their application would be incomplete without it"
One friend of mine said that you should only talk about really serious (not sure if thats the right word, but you'll see what i mean) topics, such as sexuality, immigration, homelessness, losing someone, etc. for this prompt.
Is it acceptable to write about a less "serious" topic, such as a field of study that influenced you, for this prompt if it is central to your identity?

bump since this got relegated to the bottom

Yes it’s fine. I wrote about my hobby in graphic design and how the lessons learned from self-teaching myself and the aspect of creativity has served good to my well-being.

Also I would avoid topics such as religion and politics.

@1501qwerty : thanks! any other thoughts?

Sorry, your friend is COMPLETELY wrong. A lot (and I really mean A LOT) of people don’t write about topics that serious for that prompt. I chose prompt #1 as well, but I didn’t write about anything too serious.

I actually think that writing about a field of study that interested you is a great idea! And yes, it’s definitely acceptable good luck with your essay!
