I have a really complicated family situation. My mom and dad divorced when I was a week old, and my mom, my sister, and I went to live with my grandparents. I have lived with my grandparents since then, but my mom remarried my dad last fall and moved away to live with him. So I still live with my grandparents, but not with my parents. My mom is still my legal guardian. But my parents do not pay anything for me. I realize this is going to be harder to deal with when I do financial aid, but on the common app when it says parents, should I put my parents or grandparents?

Is your mom your only legal guardian? I think you are obligated to put her, but you might want to attach something explaining your situation in the additional info area.

is not the application for Financial Aid. FAFSA is where you will put the financial info......your parents will have to fill that out for themselves and you will fill out a section for yourself. Be sure to log on to the site and apply for you PIN now.

I would just put down your mother and father on the app form. It doesn't matter anyway.

The issue about financial aid needs to be addressed, though. The college will expect them to both contribute towards your education and this will affect the amount of FA that you receive. They will both be expected to fill out the FA forms. If this isn't possible, you might be able to get a waiver, but someone in authority will have to certify that they do not provide any support.

There is a separate forum on the CC main talk page that is for FA questions.
