Common App Race Question (African American vs African?)

So I’m Ethiopian-American, my parents immigrated from Ethiopia, I was born in Germany and moved to the US as a baby. On the Common App, after checking off that you’re black/African American, it asks for more specifics and includes both the options US/African-American and African. Is the African-American option intended for people who don’t know which country they’re from?? I’m a US citizen so I’m technically African-American, but I really don’t understand the point of having African on there as well… For right now I have both checked off but that seems completely redundant to me. I feel like if you have African American checked it’s a given you’re also African… And if it changes anything I identify more as African than African American, but since it’s asking “Which best describes your Black or African American background?”, and not about my identity, I don’t know if I should take that into account.

Im ethiopian but unlike you, I am not a u.s citizen, so I just identify as black or african. Not african american. To be african american you have to be american which I am not so my situation is a little different

@pslovenadia wahh it’s so simple for you lol. anyway it’s fine, I just went with african and submitted my application
