So, the process has officially begun. The common app already has me a little stumped by the activities & work section, and I was hoping people could share thoughts/experiences/recommendations when it comes to filling out that section as well as the entire application.

Here are the problem areas Ive enountered:
Do private voice, piano, etc. lessons count as an activity?
Is dance as a whole one activity or a different one for each style/location (if its not all at one studio)?
Being in shows in and out of school???? What about a theatre company you did only one show with? One youve done a few with? School theatre?

Other common app questions:
Did you use the Arts supplement? If so, for all schools or just those that dont see you audition? Just curious.

Haha, maybe Im overanalyzing it all, but I couldnt help but think that some others would have these questions too.

yes, private lessons count as an activity. My D listed her voice and dance lesson hours. The schools want to see how you spend your time outside of school. How you choose to present your activities, bundled or unbundled, so to speak, is up to you.

My D did not use Arts supplement. None of her schools want or needed it. They get your resume and headshots at audition. We did, however, send her resume (not headshot) and a rec from her theatre director to her non-audition school.

Ok, let me be sure I understand. If my daughter applies to her BA/non audition schools with the common app, she fills out the arts supplement, but for her auditions BFA schools she does not?

Check with the individual schools. They will tell you exactly what they need and want. Most of D’s schools specifically told her that they didn’t need the Arts Supplement.
