Anybody use the Common Application, and what's the deal with it? I saw that very many colleges will take the Common App, do they look down on it, give you less consideration, what? Thanks in advance

Colleges agree to not discriminate against common app applicants when they agree to use the app itself...of course there is no way to really really tell (I was kinda paranoid so I filled out my app for tufts through them, and their website actually had the app separared into common app and the rest of the app)

I have also recieved the common app from schools like Harvard and Yale in the mail embedded in their brochures....so I'd say don't worry about it and if you're ultra paranoid about any specific school go ahead and fill out their app(s) as it will probably just be a few minutes of copy paste. It probably won't make any difference but piece of mind is priceless as I like to say.

The Common App basically saved my life during the admissions process.

I highly recommend it. Every college to which I was accepted used the Common App, so I found that there was no discrimination. In fact, a lot of schools even require it.

Personally I think it's to your benefit to put together one really high-quality Common App than dividing your time (and quality) on a bunch of separate applications. Colleges know you're applying other places. They won't be offended by use of the Common App.

I would have gone absolutely crazy if I had to put together separate applications. It makes life so much easier when you write ONE main essay, write down all your personal information just ONCE, and just fill out each school-specific supplement as the deadlines approach.

Also, if you're using the Common App I really encourage you to do it online. The website easily lists what colleges you've submitted applications to, when each is due, etc. Some colleges even waive the application fee if you submit your app online.

does anyone know which ivies/highly selective schools accept common apps?

Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, and Cornell are the Ivies who accept the Common App.

When I used UPenn's application, I found it to be really similar to the Common App. It was just annoying reentering all the information.

Actually, the University of Pennsylvania just joined the Common App. It'll be on it next year. I guess Brown and Columbia are a bit late to the game, haha.

Duke also accepts the common app, and Penn and NW are going to start taking it in the fall.

Ugh, if only Penn had joined a year earlier! It makes sense though, they have basically the same application. I literally copied my Common App essay into Penn's.

I noticed that there were no colleges with the title "University of ____" on the list. Are they called something else there and i'm just missing it or what?

"I noticed that there were no colleges with the title "University of ____" on the list. Are they called something else there and i'm just missing it or what?"

They're there, but they're listed as "_____, University of".

Almost all my schools that use the Common App require it (e.g. Yale doesn't have its own app - you HAVE to fill out the Common App and their supplement). The only anomaly is Princeton, which has an option, but its questions are the same (duh! they can't ask different questions on different apps!). Half my other schools don't take it and I'm kinda ****ed about that.

best part of the CA is the 'Topic of your choice' one... :)

I was pretty much dependent on the common app, with 11 of my 12 apps from the common app, i'm pretty much in debt to it, it was so simple. Personally I had done it by paper, and at first I regretted it, but oh well. All in all, it turned out for the best, so I can't be upset about that :).

I have an off topic question. When I tried registering for the Common App. website, I notice that it says : "You will not be able to change this information after registering" for the option of where am I applying (i.e. as first year/transfer for spring 06, fall 06, spring 07). Does that mean I have to wait till they include fall 07 to register?

Yeah, you have to register when the new Common App comes out. I think it's around August? Don't worry though, the questions don't really change. :)

Not necceraily for the Common App, but just Apps in general, for the teacher recs, do the teachers have to fill out sep. rec sheets for each different application?

I imagine if you have like 5 or 6 different applications filled out it could be very tiresome for them...

It depends on the school. If the school is not a coppmon app school then you simply fill out thier form.

D applied to 7 schools using the common app and was accepted at all 7. She gave each teacher one copy of the common app, they filled out the info once and place an original signature on each application and mailed out with their rec, which they placed a separate sheet of paper (probably will have it saved as a document on their computer so that they can print out multiple copies) then will just put an original signature on the rec .
