Common Writing Section Mistakes

<p>Maybe s/he's talking about a passive voice... like "being" is often used as in "she was being followed", which is not considered correct. (You should say, "X was following her" or something.)</p>

<p>I was looking at a grammar book, and I didn't understand something. I forgot what it was..."participle something" about how run isn't ran it is run. It sounded fishy, explanation?</p>

<p>JackAss - I'm not really an expert, but I would think "she received an award for being valedictorian" would be correct.</p>

<p>glucose101 - If you're using the pluperfect tense (as in SHE HAD TAKEN piano lessons for 5 years, but she couldn't find middle C), then you say run instead of ran. As in "I had just run 5 miles, and I needed water." NEVER say "I had ran". Ran is just the regular past tense, like I ran 5 miles.</p>
