CommonApp Question

4: Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

Let's say I'm super-interested in backgammon. Would expressing my love of backgammon as a 'creative work' work? It does show more of your personal side. Or is it a bit too...uncommon?

And no, in reality, I don't even know how to play backgammon, but I do have an interesting idea for my essay, and if backgammon works for this, my topic probably works as well.

Could somebody please help?

If I'm reading the essay question correctly, I would say that backgammon or another inanimate object would not fulfill the essay requirements. The question is asking you to write about a character (fictional person) in a creative work or a historical figure that has influenced you. I think you're being asked to select a character in a creative work that has influenced you, not the creative work itself. I might be mistaken, though.

well, what's your real topic? For backgammon, I'd agree with the above post and say that an inanimate object doesn't fulfill the essay requirements. But we might be able to find something to work for your other topic...

I think the best essays are the ones can help the admissions staff see what you have DONE and some of your strenghts. So i think the best option is #6, which is "what you would bring to a college campus".

No it doesn't fit with that topic, but it sounds like a very interesting idea, why don't you just use option 6?
