Communications major w/ Poli Sci Minor - Then law school...

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some feedback....

I'm considering majoring in communications with a concentration in rhetoric and public address and minoring in political science.

I then hope to attend law school (preferably a tier 1 university). I'm not certain of which field of law I would want to focus on yet.

I believe that my undergrad background could help me do well as an attorney. A communications major will help me by teaching me to prepare convincing arguments, bridge gaps between varying viewpoints, build strong persuasion skills, and etc.

I'm interested in political science, but not interested enough to major in that field of study. I think by dipping my toes into that field I'll have enough knowledge to distinguish between justice and injustice, understand the legitimate purposes of government, and the necessary limits of political power. It will give me just enough understanding of the political system and things related so I'm not completely clueless once I'm in law school.

What are your opinions? I'm open to all suggestions; I'm still in the position of change my major as I'm still working on my general requirements.

Rhetoric and political are a good combination of fields. The oral communication skills learned in a rhetoric major could be useful in a law career. My only concern is whether the rhetoric major at your particular school also would foster writing and analytic thinking skills as well as some other majors might. Those areas are important for doing well on the LSAT and in law school.
