Community college vs gap year, transferring to University of Michigan, other better schools.. Help!!

Just a disclosure, my mom is really hard headed, she hasn't gone to a university, and is a know it all. I'm a senior right now, and my birthday is next November so I'll still be 17 when college starts, which limits a lot.

I did pretty well in high school, not outstanding, but a 3.8 gpa, advanced math and science, special English and history program, a few AP classes will be taken senior year, leadership positions, clubs, volunteering, all the basic stuff. 28 ACT and retaking in a week.

Money is an issue and my mom is not interested in applying for financial aid. We are middle class and she considers financial aid "welfare". I can't apply for financial aid myself. I've told her we should, please don't tell me to just make her do it because she will not.

I really want to go to the University of Michigan, but of course I don't know if I'll even get in with this application. I'd like to do the Ross business program. But I'm not even entirely sure I want to do business.

------- you can skip to this part for the basic question ----------

I was highly considering a gap year, just to figure out what I want to do and probably resume building things. But my mom won't let me. She is inconvincable. So she suggests I go to community college, ie Schoolcraft. But will I even be able to go to any better schools after community college?? A lot of people go to michigan state after Schoolcraft but I have no interest in going there. I just want to go to a decent school that I've worked for, and is it even possible to transfer to u of m after a community college? Or any pretty good college? I know like nothing about transferring :( thanks for any responses

Apply to college of arts and sciences, you won’t get into Ross with those stats even though you are smart. A gap year may be a good idea but it just seems like you are running away from your problems. Community college isn’t that bad.

If you choose to go to a community college, you can make it work. However, do not let her influence your decisions. Trust me. One thing leads to another and before you know it she will be telling you what your major should be, and what school you will transfer to after CC, and when you should go to bed. What if you do pay for two years of CC out of pocket, and then go another two years to wherever you transfer without any financial aid? You will probably be in more debt than spending the four years at a school of your choice with aid. Even if you took a gap year, being 18 doesn’t help you much. You still need your parents information for aid.

You could always use the IRS Date Retrieval Tool if you have enough info…
