Community service - do you REALLY do it because you like it?

im president of NHS at my school so i do so much community service all the time. at first i was just doing for the college apps but now im starting to really enjoy it and get a personal satisfaction from it. im hoping to find a similar position once i get to college.

i volunteer at 2 hospitals....one of them i absolutely love going to volunteer i mean even if i wasn't getting credit for it i would still do it, the second one there are fun and boring days....sometimes i lke it a lot other times i ask myself while im still doing it after 3 years

At my school, 40 hours of community service are NECESSARY in order for you to graduate, I doubt I would do them if they were not neccesary.

I'm sure many people do community service because they like it. I help underrepresented minority students because I want to show them that they can do something with their lives - and I'm not putting those "hours" of service on my college apps. I do it because those kids deserve it, not so I can go to some big shot school. I don't even do NHS because I think it pressures you into doing community service for the wrong reasons.

my community service is fun i volunteer at a local death blind center..and i help out in activities there its actually a national center and its a ton of fun ive learned new games my sign language is improving and i know im helping out

lol. of course not.

Originally, I was going to Habitat for Humanity or work at the YMCA or something. No, I wouldn't have enjoyed that.

Now I'm a volunteer math tutor and I think it's very interesting. I like to help people with upper-level homework mostly though, but it ends up usually being mainly people taking Algebra/Geometry/etc. Just gets kinda boring.

I only do it so that I get into a good college then make BIG BUCKS!

Well college was definitely the catalyst but some of the things i truly enjoy doing. Some suck but I enjoy helping the environment and giving blood. Those are truly enjoyable volunteer events. I recommend them to you all.

PS Mike...lol sad. I'd let you help taste my chowder if I hosted a Chowdafest. Also, im sorry you are so obese. I didnt know...

ahahahah I've been misinterperted, I am not obese, in fact I would be able to do a lot of activies such as running around dispersing water and the like. Also I don't like Chower. I can't wait to leave LBI!

suuuuuure...fatty ;)

Most of the community service I did in high school was because I truly enjoyed it. I tutoring elementary school kids at a local library, and did a lot of stuff with my church. Some of the stuff I did with church I didn't enjoy, but since it was with people I liked, I had tons of fun anyway.

The only community service I did to get into college was stuff for NHS. We had to do two group projects a year, and I didn't really get to choose stuff I did for those. But then, I forgot to put NHS on some of my college apps (because I didn't really care about it).

So yeah, I'd say I did (and do) community service because I truly enjoy it, and because I think it's rewarding.

Well, everyone makes up the fluff that they want to do selfless deeds. However, I am the kind of person who doesn't believe in selfless deeds. I don't think any deed is entirely selfless. Take any example. Let's look at deworming orphans in Africa. The person who deworms the orphans isn't deworming the orphans completely for their sake, because subconsciously, that person feels good when they do it. So part of the reason is because that person wants to feel good after deworming the orphans. And thus, there is no such thing as a completely selfless act.

Okay maybe that was a bit off topic.

Well, I guess you could say that. I mean, I enjoy doing the community service I do, and also, I like feeling good, and I feel good when a child finally understands something I'm teaching them, or something like that. So it's not completely selfless.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, though. It does annoy me sometimes when people do community service just for college applications, though, especially when they're tutoring the kids, and they don't really like the kids and aren't really good at tutoring.

ok the not being good at tutoring and still doing it is a valid point to be annoyed but otherwise, why be annoyed at people who do comm service just for college? i think this is one of the benefits of college paranoia (nearly forcing kids to do volunteer work)

Some of it I used to do for requirements, but I do all of it now because I really like it. Part of the reason for liking it is that colleges will like it...but mostly it's for the good feeling I get helping kids.

How come all the chances to volunteer are like for tutoring or helping in daycares or hospitals? I have to get 40 hours to graduate and right now i'm at zero! Mostly because all the oppurtunities are boring...Has anyone found anything they thought was actually a lot of fun?

What do you like to do?

Tell us what you think is fun, and we'll help you try to find ways to volunteer in those areas.

I personally love kids, so I think tutoring is fun. Apparently you don't though, so what do you enjoy?

I love art and being active(sports and stuff),
actually, by fun I mean giving up a weekend of parties, and meeting guys for something equally fun(volunteering).
My friend volunteers at a food bank and she is like obsessed with it... so I guess everyone has their thing...

actually, you know what, the more I type the more hopeless it seems....

Well, if you're not into service, I won't say that you're going to find anything equally fun.

But maybe there's something you can do during the week, so it doesn't cut into your weekends?

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities with art and sports. What kinds of people do you like to work with? Kids, the mentally or physically challenged, the elderly? And would you like to work in a museum or referee for a sports game? There are a gazillion ways to help out in the community, and though it may not be as fun as parties and guys, I think you can find something you'll enjoy.
