Hello there, I will be a junior in high school this fall. As of right now, I only have 5 hours of community service. However, during the next school year I will be getting 40-50 hours of community service through a school program that allows me to tutor those in need of assistance (usually new immigrants with a small understanding of the english language and very poor.) I will be getting another 40-50 hours my senior year as well. However, a good portion of those hours will not make it on to my applications so I will proboably only have around 65 hours of community service when it is time for me to apply. How many hours would be recommended for me to have? I really want to get into a good college. Also, does it matter as to what kind of service I get in addition to tutoring? I don't know if this influences how many hours I should have but I have a 3.99 gpa (I am sure this will drop to 3.9 or 3.8 when it comes time to apply), 3 AP credits, will have 7 more AP credits junior year and 6 more senior year, so I will have 16 total. I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet but I am expecting it to be atleast well above average. My extracurriculars are pretty minimal. (I only have 2-3 activities.)

Dont worry too much about community service.
I had like zero hours of community service.

I do not want to hijack the topic, but this is very much related to a dilemma of mine.

I volunteer at two places, and I am strongly considering a third. I enjoy what I do at the two places I currently volunteer at, and I anticipate that I will enjoy volunteering at the third. As I am not doing anything large during the summer (as far as programs go), I wanted to use my free time to its best use and volunteer as much as possible; however, restricting myself to one location would prevent this. Besides, I want to do all of the programs, as they are all equally appealing to me.

In short, would it seem as if I were simply padding my application to split these “hours” between three places?

No, not at all. You can definitely volunteer at all three places!

As for not having community service, if you are applying to a top university, you really should have some ECs - not necessarily community service, but something that you are dedicated to.

Don’t worry too much about ECs. Just do whatever you
want and if you dont want to do anything thats fine.I had
like zero ECs
