Community Service or Paid Work?

Hi, I'm about to start my Senior year in Spain, and I'm hoping to attend an American college next year. I wanted to ask: what is more impressive to colleges: community service or paid work (as an ESL tutor)?

To clarify, I’m talking about the same amount of hours of community service vs paid work.

Probably community service, but it really depends what kind.

I have the option to charge for ESL classes or give them for free as volunteer work - what should I choose? I think on one hand, if you’re paid for a service it appears as if you were doing higher quality work than if you were doing it for free? What do you think?

both. charge for classes and use money to donate for another charity

I’m pretty sure they would prefer that you have community service/paid work gearing towards your major. Unless you intend to become a teacher or something in the future… I say community service…

Neither is more impressive than the other. Tutoring for free or for pay is still tutoring. And it’s a good and worthwhile experience, especially if you plan to teach. But if your goal is to impress, you should be thinking of activities where you differentiate yourself from all the other students who are applying. Many students tutor so that isn’t one of them.

If you weren’t aware, we’re in a global recession. You’re apparently doing the same work whether you charge or not so I say take the money and run! American universities are not going to care if the tutoring is not in your area of study either- not at the undergraduate level at least.
