Commuter school?

im from nyc and i really love UMCP, but i've heard the term commuter school quite frequently, this turns me off a bit bc i dont want to go to a school that basically gets deserted on the weekends bc everyone lives in MD

does anyone know about this first hand?

while there is a large commuter population, many students live within walking distance from the university. also, i can attest to the fact that unlike other maryland state schools there is a HUGGEEE student presence on campus at nights and definitely on the weekends if you are looking for things to do. Other campuses, many students leave for the weekends. Again, I think you should wait for someone elses opinion, but this is just how I see it.

I would say that if you live on campus, you will notice that a most students, even Maryland residents stay on campus during the weekends. I lived on campus for my first two years, and I probably went home about once a month. My little brother lives on campus now, and has gone home...twice this semester outside of Thanksgiving break. And we live about 25 minutes from campus.

thank u for your answers :)

I agree with the other posters. The number of commuters are skewed because if you live off campus you are considered a commuter, but there is ALOT of off-campus housing, greek life, apartment complexes etc.

In fact, the past few years they have kicked a bunch of juniors and seniors off campus because they don't have enough housing for them. Most people walk to campus or drive 10-20 minutes and alot still goes on on-campus, in college park, etc.

Even though a lot of people commute, keep in mind that UMCP has a huge student body. I've been on campus many times and it doesn't get deserted on the weekend

Lived my first and second years on campus and very few people in the dorms go home on weekends...UMCP is not a commuter school, it's a PARTY school ;). Next year I'll technically be a "commuter" because I am being kicked off campus. However, there's a huge, huge selection of houses, rooms, apartments, etc. walking distance from campus. So I plan to still remain firmly entrenched in the college and town even if I am a "commuter."

lol it's only deserted in the wee hours on weekends otherwise there's always people. THere's a fairly large population which stays on campus or really close IMO

you can certainly commute from NY to UMCP, it's 4 hours drive :D I don't recommend it though
