Commuting or Dorming

I am thinking about going to SBU for the fall semester of 2019. Should I commute from Queens Village to SBU (I wouldn’t drive, I will most likely take public transportation, train and/or bus) or dorm? Which would be better? Which would cost more? And do you get to pick your roommate(s)? thanks!

Your best bet is to see how much housing will be. I think all freshman are required to live on campus. The commute is time consuming

Queens Village to Stony Brook is a hike. It’s doable as a commute, but then you’re at the mercy of the trains. I always recommend students live on campus if they can – it makes lots of things easier – but you’re not required to live on campus by any means.

That would be a long commute. If affordable I’d start off by living on campus.

And the thing with “affordable” is that you have to factor in the time and hassle and cost of the physical commute, too. Being tied to a train schedule, or paying for gas and upkeep on your car, etc.
