commuting to umich

Hello everyone

I have been admitted to umich, and though I live in michigan ( 40 min away from ann arbor in moderate whether conditions), I am considered a nonresident. Therefore, it will be very difficult to afford ann arbor even with finanical aid. so , I have been considering commuting to umich whenever needed just to save alot of money ( avg. 8k on housing ). and I was wondering from the students who actually did this or are planning on doing this, is it worth it driving there, or should I live in ann arbor and pay for housing? By the way, I am planning to get extremely involved on campus, will commuting hinder my plans?
Now I strongly believe that I should commute, and the only reason I am hesitating is because my parents insist that I live in aa ,- I would love to - but honestlyI just dont want to be a financial burden on my parents.

I have similar situation metalmid. I live roughly 40-45 minutes from ann arbor and still debating whether I should live near by or commute to the campus. I am a transfer student for fall 2007 (college of engineering). I agree that commuting could save you money, but sacrificing the campus life and living experience of being near campus.
I live in Troy, Oakland county, where do you live metalmid?

It's more like 60 minutes from Troy to AA and that would be during non busy times. I personally do not think it's worth it. You would miss out so much driving at least two hours a day.

I live in Dearborn.

But guess what? the most amazing thing happened to day. I recieved a letter in the mail... I recieved a scholarship that will resolve this whole situation. I dont know if fate is messing me, one day it brings me down, the other it springs me up. Well, anyways, leemtogo, I was thinking that it is true that you will miss significant experience, But the education might be worth it, and hopefully such a situation can be worked out so you dont have to be in ann arbor daily.
If that is possible and you are satisfied than I say you should go for it.

40 minutes? Seems like gas costs would start to cut into your savings
